2B Pineal and Pancreas Glands Xena Antoinette Dayana
The endocrine system • The Endocrine system is made out of 8 major glands, they’re group of cells that produce and secrete chemicals. Organs such as the kidney, liver, heart and the gonads help the Endocrine System. The kidney secretes hormones (erythropoietin and renin).
Pancreas Gland- Location • The pancreas is located in the abdomen, behind the stomach and connected to the small intestine
Pineal Gland- Location • This gland is located behind the third cerebral ventricle in midline of the brain. Which is deep inside the brain.
Function- Pineal gland • The pineal gland is a small gland that produces serotonin derivative melatonin, that hormone affects you wake/sleep functions.
Function- Pancreas • The enzymes that are secreted by the exocrine gland helps break down carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and acids that are found in the duodenum. • -Made up of two glands: exocrine and endocrine. • -The hormones that are secreted in the endocrine gland in the pancreas are glucagon, insulin, and somatostain.
Hormones Pineal Gland produces melatonin. Influences sleep/wake cycles. Sexual development Pancreas produces insulin and glucagon. Regulates levels of glucose in the blood
Hormone- Insulin • regulates glucose levels in blood. Makes it possible for glucose to enter our body’s cells.
Hormone- Glucagon • Glucagon is secreted by cells that are called “alpha” when the blood glucose is low. Whenever the blood glucose is high no glucagon is secreted. Glucose has more effect on the liver. Its function is to cause the liver to release glucose from the cells to the blood.
Pineal gland- Disorder Melatonin deficency • A deficient amount of melatonin is released • Symptoms • Insomnia • Anxiety • Elevated estrogen/progesterone ratio
Pancreas- Diabetes • The pancreas is very much responsible for the secretion of insulin and glucose to control blood sugar, improper functioning can lead to diabetes. • Symptoms of diabetes= Increased urination, Excessive thirst and appetite, unusual weight loss or gain. (see video for diabetes)
Interesting facts ;) • The pancreas has taste receptors, just like our mouth does in order to detect sweetness. • The pineal gland is cone shaped and it can also be called “the third eye”

Concept questions??? • Where is the pancreas located? • Behind the stomach • Which hormone does the pineal gland produce? • melatonin • What is the function of the hormone Insulin? • regulates glucose levels in blood
