A metric unit of area equal to 100 ares 公顷(等于100公亩) • Coral reef: 珊瑚礁 • Polyp: n. 珊瑚虫 • Skeleton: n. The internal structure composed of bone and cartilage骨架, 骨骼 • Limestone: 石灰石 • Ban: v. to prohibit, especially by official decree(法令);禁止。~ doing sth. 禁止做某事。E.g. ~ placing any material in the water.
Part One Core Listening Passage 2 • And it restricts fishing to recent and current levels: And the preserve order limits fishing volume no more than recent and current levels. 它依照最近和当前的标准限制捕鱼。 • Fishing using explosives: 使用炸药捕鱼 Remarks: It’s very important for the world political leaders to take some actions to preserve underwater nature. When we compare Mr. Clinton with Mr. Bush, we may find some obvious differences: Clinton declared the underwater nature preserve, and Bush refused to sign the agreement for preserving the atmosphere.

Plug in: connect to power插上电源; ~ and play: 即插即用 • Switch on/off: turn on/off • Keep flashing: 不停地闪烁;e.g. keep talking, keep asking me questions. • It says ALARM:It reads ALARM. 要用一般现在时态 • Mechanism: n. 机制 safety ~ 安全机制 Remark: In fact, it is a false alarm (一场虚惊) since the user didn’t put any water in the machine. The dialogue implies that we should read the instructions carefully before we use a brand new machine.

Dictation • Aim: v., n. direct, intend, target; goal, purpose. e.g. ~ to do sth: intend to do sth; • The agreement is aimed at reducing the production of the gases…: 该协议旨在减少温室气体的产生。 • Opposition (to): n. objection 反对 Remarks: As we know, afterward, the US Senate disapproved such an positive agreement because it would cost the US high budget to restrict releasing harmful gases. Unfortunately, since Bush administration, several negative decisions have been made like this.

To strengthen or support with other evidence; make more certain; verify. E.g. You can ~ my words. • Compensate: v. to make satisfactory payment or reparation to; recompense or reimburse; make up for. 补偿、赔偿
Part Three Supplementary Listening Passage 1 UFO • UFO:Unidentified Flying Object, flying saucer不明飞行物, 飞碟 • Frightened: a. scared 受惊吓的 • Watched the door of the strange craft open: 看着那个奇怪的飞行器的门打开。Watch sb/sth do sth. (不定式do省略了to, 作宾语补足语)。类似的及物动词还有make, have, see, hear, feel, let 等。Help后面可以省略to, 也可保留to。 • Humming: a. a low sound like the one made by bee flying • Hypnotize: v. To put into a state of sleeping 施催眠术 • Not only did she repeat her story, (but also)…:她不仅…而且…。 Not only在句首引出倒装句。
Part Three Supplementary Listening Passage 2 Soaring • Soar: v. to rise, fly, or glide high and with little apparent effort. 高飞,翱翔,滑翔 • Care about: v. worry about, concern 担心 • Glider: n. a light, engineless aircraft designed to glide after being pulled into the air or launched from a catapult(飞机弹射器). 滑翔机 • Ride: v., n. to be carried or conveyed, as in a vehicle 乘坐 • The person on the ground runs along with the glider to keep its wings level for the first few feet: 地面那个人跟随滑翔机跑,以便使它的两翼在最初几英尺保持水平。
Part Three Supplementary Listening Passage 2 Soaring • Gather speed: increase speed, accelerate, speed up • In the distance: far away 在远处 • Rudder pedal: 方向舵 • Try pushing the stick forward a little: 试着把操纵杆向前推一点儿。 Try: make an effort to do or accomplish (something); attempt: e.g. try doing sth. 试着做某事 Remarks: learning flying a glider seems very exciting, because it is the first step for people to soar into the sky. The text Soaring shows us a process how a glider coach teaches his trainee to fly. Besides, we may learn something on glider flight as well.
