The Role of the Directorate of Labour • The Directorate of Labour has issued work permits to foreigners in Iceland since 1998. • Guidelines applied by The Directorate of Labour when issuing wpork permits. • There is no intention to give up the linkage between the issuing of work permits to foreigners and the employment situation at any present time.

Change in procedures when issuing residence – and work permits to people who arrive from the EEA countries. • On 7th of September the government issued an announcement regarding a change in procedures when issuing residence and work permits making a clear distinction between people arriving from the EEA countries, and people from outside the EEA; • EEA residence permits • Work permits continue • The main reasons are those that; • Interim provisions for adjustment did not function as expected • Great labour demand
BEFORE: The following documents must acompany the application: Passport photograph Photocopy of passport / travel documents Secure housing verification Health insurance Original copy of Criminal record certificate with authorized translation Bill of health Contract of employment Comments from the relevant labour union AFTER: The following documents must accompany the application: Passport photograph Photocopies of passport / travel documents Contract of employmnet Changed procedures when issuing residence- and work permits to people who arrive from EEA countries.
Increased demand for the EURES - service • In order to implement the government policies we hope to be able to meet the demand for foreign labour, through supply of people from the European Economic Area. • It is obvious that the demand for labour from these countries will increase significantly. • It will result in increased strain on Eures database functionaries.
