Explain reasons for European exploration and settlement of North America, with emphasis on the interests of the French, Spanish, and British in the southeastern area.

Spanish- Hernando de Soto • 1540 1st European to explore interior of Ga. • Looking for Gold • Helped conquer Inca’s in Peru before Ga. • Landed in Florida’s Western Gulf Coast. • Proceeded Northward through Georgia and into S.C., N.C., Tenn.- back into North Ga., then Alabama and Miss. ( See Map) • De Soto died near Miss River where his fellow “ Conquistadors” sank him to the bottom of the River.

  4. de Soto’s Conquest • 1538 Left Cuba with 600 followers. • On his trail ( the “Conquistadors” met various Mississippian Indian tribes. • Forcibly took supplies and food from tribes. • No Gold or Silver Found. • Half of the 600 died from disease, exposure, or Indian attacks. • *Many Indians killed in battle, enslaved, exposed tonew diseases- many now dead. • Smallpox, chicken Pox, measles. • *Weapons and disease nearly wipe out Indian population.

  8. Spanish Missions In Georgia • Mission- church outpost • Spain built missions on Fl. And Ga. Coast. • Friars lived and worked at the missions. • Friar- Church Missionaries. • Also served as trading outpost between Spanish and Native Americans. • Missions not always welcome by Natives. • Several Friars died in Indian revolts. • Missions served as churches, trading posts, and forts • *Reason for missions- conversion to Christianity of native Americans ( Catholic) • *Placed on coast to keep the French away

  10. Decline of Spanish Missions in Georgia • Indian Chiefs had autonomy over the Friars. • But, Indians were obligated to repartimiento - Indians forced to work on Plantationsfor cheap trade items. ( forced relocations) • Many died from disease or exhaustion. • Indian population levels drop dramatically. • Slave revolts, Population decline, and Pirate raids from the sea all pushed to end the Spanish Mission system in Ga. • 1684- Spanish Missions in Ga. ended.
