Early Life • Born in 1496/97/1500 in either Barcarrota or Badajoz, Spain. • Father was a provincial nobleman. But the family had fallen on hard financial times. • At 14 looked 19. • Educated in Humanities, His mother wanted him to be a clergyman. • Had dreams of being a Conquistador. • Neightbor to Balboa.
Young Life • Departed Seville on April 11, 1514 as Pedrarias Davila‘s page. • Landed on Columbia. • Became the guard of the women and later the prisoners. • At 17 he bacame the Captain of the Lancers for bravery. • Felt shame executing prisoners.
Escaping the New World • While in command de Soto said “I shall never let it be said that I have attacked a defeated enemy or questioned a gentleman‘s word“ • De Soto, Campanon and Ponce de leon made a 3 way pact to try to get back to Spain.
Inca • Had a decision to make: Go back to Spain or accompany Fransico Pizzaro to Peru. • He chose the latter and was appointed second in command. • Met with Atahualpa, King of the Inca, to try and discuss peace. • Had a part in conquering the Inca.
Incan Conquest • Led to the capture of Atahualpa. • He promised to fill a room with gold and another room filled twice with silver. • He actually had 29,000 pounds of gold recieved for his ransom. • De Soto recieved 17,740 pesos of gold and 724 marks of silver. • All agreed he deserved more.
Spain • After de Soto finished everything in Peru he went back to Panama. • He sold his belongings and put his cash into gold for the trip to Spain. • With his gold and prestige he will now be able to marry Pedrarias‘ daughter. • They built a house in Seville and were well liked throughout the city.
Primary Sources • A letter from de Soto to the Board of Magistrates in Cuba. • Relation of the events to the King of Spain in 1544 by a man on the trip. • Portray de Soto as a caring, God fearing man and not as the monster that is being taught in schools. • Tried to convert natives whenever possible and never crossed them like his predicesors.
The Journey • Landed near Tampa bay headed north thinking the FOY was a short way away. • Continued north encountering many tribes along the way. • Wintered in North Carolina then went south to try to reach the coast and supplies. • Went across Mississippi and reached the Mississippi River, crossed it (the first to do so) and reached warm water springs in Arkansas. • Sent cavalry south to reach New Spain but they were too far away. • De Soto died May 21, 1542.
The Journey Without the Leader • They sank his body with blankets filled with sand in the river. • Luis de Moscoso Alvarado his field comander was left in charge. • He took the remaining conquistadors, quickly built boats and went down the river and into the gulf to reach New Spain
