  1. ZHnnbb results from DØ Makoto Tomoto Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory Oct. 20, 2005 TeV4LHC

  2. Outline Introduction Event Selection Results How analysis improved? Conclusion

  3. Introduction • Tevatron Higgs Searches • WH/ZH, Hbb is best for light Higgs search ZHnnbb … 15 events/fb-1 ZHllbb … 2 events/fb-1 WHlnbb … 14 events/fb–1 (MH=115GeV) ppZHnnbb is one of promising channel at Tevatron Production s(pb) Br(HX) 1.0 – 0.1 pb 1000-100 events @ 1fb-1 Excluded Excluded 0.2 – 0.01 pb 200-10 events @ 1fb-1 Decay mH (GeV/c2) mH (GeV/c2) Br(Znn) = 20 % Br(Wln) = 10 % Br(Zll) = 3.4 %

  4. n Z Z* n b H b Signature of ZHnnbb • Missing ET from Znn and 2 b jets from Hbb • No isolated leptons • Missing ET should be large • 2 jets have relatively large momentum • 2 jets shouldn’t be back-to-back • 2 jets should be from b quark  b-tagging • Backgrounds • “physics” backgrounds  Can be estimated from MC • W+jets, Z+jets, top, ZZ, and WZ • “instrumental” backgrounds  Estimated from data • QCD multijet events with mismeasurement of jets • Huge cross section & small acceptance • Strategy • Tag signal events with missing ET • How to reduce background? • How to estimate “instrumental” backgrounds? • Search for excess of Higgs signature from di-bjet mass distribution ET Jet1 Jet2

  5. Event Selection • L=261pb-1 • For Event tag and “physics” background rejection • ET > 25 GeV  for Znn • #Jets  2, both jets pT>20 GeV, |h|<2.5  for Hbb • Isolated track veto  Rejection of W/Z to leptons • HT = S|pT(jets)| < 200 GeV  for tt rejection • For “instrumental” background rejection • Df(dijet) < 165 • ET, jet missing ET, track missing pT • HT = -|SpT(jet)| • PTtrk = -|SpT(trk)|, • PT,2trk = -|SpT(trk in dijet)| • Asym(ET,HT) = (ET-HT)/(ET+HT) • Rtrk = |PTtrk-PT,2trk|/PTtrk … They should peak at~ 0, if signal like events ET HT PTtrk PT.2trk Jet1 Jet2

  6. Instrumental background estimation sideband signal sideband Physics background from MC Instrumental background from sideband Double Gaussian Physics … 1579 from fit 1600 from MC Instrumental … 524 from fit Exponential

  7. Distributions of ET + 2 jets Total Data : 2140 Expect : 2125

  8. Jet Secondary Vertex +d0 P(d0/s(d0)) Primary vertex B-tagging • Impact Parameter b-tagging • B hadrons travel some distance (~1mm) from the primary vertex • B hadrons generate ~4 charged tracks from charm cascade decay • Probability distributions based on impact parameter significance • Efficiency depends on pT and h of jets ~50% b-tagging efficiency ~0.5% light quark mistag rate Light quark jet bkg 1/100

  9. Distributions after single b-tagging Total Data : 132 Expect : 145

  10. Distributions after double b-tagging Total Data : 9 Expect : 6.4

  11. Candidate ET=54.3GeV 2nd leading jet: pT = 47.9GeV Phi = 358 degree Eta = 0.83 Leading jet : pT = 52.5GeV Phi = 239 degree Eta = -0.42 Mjj = 100.7GeV

  12. Results Systematic Uncertainty

  13. How analysis improved? Need progress on b-tagging, trigger, and selection optimization

  14. Improvement • Selection optimization • Relaxed pre-selection • Correlation ET, HT, and PTtrk • #jets ≥ 2  #jets = 2 or 3 • Selection optimization • pT of 2 leading jets • ET • HT • B-tagging operation points • Medium criteria (both)  Tight(1st) + Loose(2nd) • Adjustment of mass window • In the future • More efficient trigger • NN b-tagging • NN selection • Good mass resolution using track jets Improvement: Efficiency … factor of 3 S/B … factor of 1.5

  15. Conclusion • First search for ZH production at Tevatron Run II • Background understood well • Could estimate instrumental background from data • 2nd round of analysis is in progress • Selection optimization will improve signal efficiency by factor of 3 • Improvement from trigger, b-tagging, jet resolution will follow in the future
