Mind Pollution Text: I Th. 5:21-22 Date: August 20, 2006 David Pike
Sources of Mind Pollution The World Is An Evil Influence – “I testify of it that its works are evil.” (Jh. 7:7) Satan is the Source – “…for he is a liar and the father of it.” (Jh. 8:44) Worldly Pollutions – “all that is in the world - the lust of the flesh…eyes, and the pride of life…” (I Jh. 2:15-17) Thoughts Turn Into Actions – “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts…” (Mt. 15:18-20)
Key Principles To Remember We can be de-sensitized to sin – “…lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.” (Hb. 3:13) Our eyes are windows to our heart – “…whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart…But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is your darkness.” (Mt. 5:28; 6:22-23) What goes into the heart comes out – “brothers and sisters…keep your mind on…” (Ph. 4:8) Evil can appear good – “Abstain from every form of evil.” (I Th. 5:21) “Everyone is tempted by his own desires…” (Jm. 1:14-15)

Music Industry Seventy-eight percent of girls and 88% of guys said they listen to music "often," as opposed to "seldom" or "sometimes." They named nearly 150 different favorite artists. The most popular musical genre was hard/modern rock (e.g. Dave Matthews, Limp Bizkit, Creed) to which 52% claimed to listen. Rap (e.g. Triple 6 Mafia, Eminem, Snoop Dog) was the second in popularity with 38% saying they listened. . . . It is notable, especially to concerned parents, that some hard rock and rap music often contain the most objectionable lyrics and themes.
Effects of The Music Industry Rap videos often promote drug use, violence and sex. . . (A prospective study of exposure to rap music video and African American female adolescents’ health, Wingood GM et al. American Journal of Public Health, 2003).

Remember the key principles: • Don’t be de-sensitized to sin. • Our eyes are windows to the heart. • Put good things into our heart. • Evil can appear good. • We are tempted by our own lusts.
Think About It! • Don’t be ignorant, take action – “But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.” (Ro. 13:14) • TV Guardian, Investigate, Change Channels, Watch Ratings, Misleading Program Advertising, etc. • Flee evil – “Test all things; hold fast to what is good. Abstain from every form of evil.” (I Th. 5:21-23) • Exposure harms our thoughts, words and actions – “Blessed are the pure in heart…whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” (Mt. 5:5, 28) • Remember – “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.” (Pr. 4:23)
Think About It! A Good Influence in the World – “Let your light shine before men...” (Mt. 5:16) God is the Source – “…for He makes His sun to rise on the evil and on the good...” (Mt. 5:45) Drawn by God’s teaching – “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him…” (Jh. 6:44-45) Thoughts Turn Into Actions – “…you have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine… we were buried with Him through baptism…” (Ro. 6:17, 4)
