  4. The Colonists • Who: Men and women who began life in [what would become] America • What: Lived on their own for over 125 years! • When: 1620 [Pilgrims] • Where: 3,000 miles away from Britain • Why: Colonies blossomed under self-government

  5. King George III • Who: King of England • What: Tightened control over the colonies • When: 1760-1820 • Where: England and the 13 Colonies • Why: Thought colonists were getting out of control

  6. The Royal Army • Who: Members of Britain who were loyal to the King • What: Stationed in the Colonies • When: 1770-1783 • Where: Mainly Boston, MA • Why: To collect taxes, help keep order
