  1. Welcome Begin with the end in mind. Future Problem Solving Is your child Final Four material?

What is FPS? • FPS is a part of the Governor's Cup Academic team (for 4th and 5th graders) that researches specific topics, brainstorms problems and solutions of the topics, and competes by reading a futuristic scenario that allows them to find problems, create solutions, create criteria and rank their solutions based on their own criteria and map out their own detailed solution to the biggest problem they find!

  3. What are the options or FPS programs your child could participate in? • Elementary FPS (4th and 5th Graders) • Jr. Division (6th Graders, and some 4th - 5th Graders) • Scenario Writing • Community Problem Solving (a joint effort between Leadership, STLP and FPS)

  4. How does FPS benefit your child? • Meets Gifted and Talented requirements for several areas (challenges students in creativity, general intellectual abilities, writing, science, social studies, reading, and research) • Teaches your child to think critically, understand cause and effect relationships, and challenge the conventional ideas of today’s world. • Develops reading and writing skills beyond the classroom • Develops research skills • Gives your child the opportunity to see that learning is FUN!

  5. Who belongs in FPS? • The writer • The reader • The out of the box thinker • Self-motivated students • Students who are deadline driven • Students who work well under time constraints and pressure • Students who work well on a team

  6. Who doesn’t belong in FPS? • Negative Ned and Negative Nelly • Children who do not work well in a group • Children who cannot accept criticism or have trouble when they don’t “get their way” with others • Children who are not self-motivated

  7. What would participation require? • Weekly practice meetings at school either before or after depending on the program. • Research work on your own (at home) • Dedication to team advancement • Getting along with others • Possible help with Academic Team Fundraisers • Signing a contract after the 2nd meeting and following through.

  8. When and where? •  Elementary teams compete on the Tuesday BEFORE district Governor’s Cup (February 26th) and the Tuesday BEFORE regional Governor’s Cup IF we are 1st or 2nd at district (March 19th).  • FPS for 6th (and some 5th graders) is part of the Jr. Division and is independent of 6th Grade Showcase and Governor's Cup.  It involves the same process as the elementary team (a little longer and more detailed though), but IF they qualify in December (12/6), they can compete at STATE competition in March (3/9).   • Even alternates can compete at STATE if our Jr. team makes it.    • For all teams, Mrs. Gipson is able to choose the best 4 students to compete on each FPS team (only one team for elementary and as many as we have passion and paid entry for in Jr. division.)  • I do have alternates at each level (just in case something happens), but not all students will compete.

Parents Please… • Parents/guardians will also be required to sign the contract promising to oversee at home research, pick up or drop off for practices on time, and bring child to all scheduled competitions. • Parents are encouraged to show their expertise this year in the topic areas. (Let’s face it, Mrs. G needs all the help she can get.) • Send in appropriate study material • Volunteer to answer student questions or give a lecture to the team (age appropriate please) • Work with the team in Mrs. G’s absence (Must be volunteer certified) • Be a proctor during competitions • Get certified to evaluate for our team or another local team. (Nov. 6th or Nov. 21st )
