STAR 2006 Beam Use Request Renee Fatemi RHIC SPIN Meeting October 5th 2005
More protons please! • Heavy Ion Community • Analysis for Run4/5 Au-Au/Cu-Cu data is ongoing • Accelerator Goals for Heavy Ion Program generally achieved • Upgrades necessary for large portion of future programs • Spin Community • Run3/Run4 preliminary Jet results released ! Run 4 preliminary Lambda results released! Run3 final and Run 5 preliminary forward 0 results released! • Taken <5% of necessary 275 pb-1 needed for STAR spin goals at √s = 200 GeV • Need x7 increase in Run 6 FOM compared to Run 5 to statistically differentiate between standard and zero gluon polarization scenarios • Yearly pp running time is necessary to develop ultimate luminosity/polarization requirements • Several hardware improvements make this time optimal for pp run
Use CAD projections of Max/Min luminosity for 24 weeks of running to set delivered luminosity expectation = 90 pb-1 which translates into 30 pb-1 sampled at STAR. Running time split 2/1 between longitudinal/transverse.
Transverse Spin Running Goals • Forward Physics with FPD++ • Precision 0 AN in x_F and p_T • Expanded acceptance allows detection of “jet-like” events (di-0 or +0) which can be used to separate Collins/Sivers contribution to 0 AN • New configuration allows detection of 2nd from 0 providing opportunity to start /0 discrimination algorithms
Mid-Rapidity Di-jet AN Vogelsang/Boer • Di-jet AN of deviation from back-to-back provides leading twist access to Sivers Functions. • Completion of BEMC maximizes statistical precision (not reflected in plot) • Shielding installed this summer provides crucial out of plane background reduction Level II triggers should lead to 50% enhancement in lower energy di-jet stats
{ Inclusive 0 Inclusive jet develop algos Longitudinal Running Goals 2004/2005 0 analysis in progress for forward & mid-rapidity regions 1<<2 1<<2 0<<1 Projections don’t include increase in trigger efficiency due to level II trigger + shielding
Continue Inclusive Jet ALL and X-sec for mid-rapidity 2005 2006 Start collecting di-jet sample + developing necessary - 0 discrimination algorithms for future direct photon and +jet measurements.
Important 2006 STAR Hardware Upgrades • FPD++ - reconfiguration of Pb-Glass around FPD on west side allows for Sivers/Collins separation • Iron Shielding implemented this summer will improve STAR trigger efficiency and uptime, provide crucial out of plane shielding for di-jet Sivers measurement, as well as reduce systematic errors on inclusive jet/0 measurements • Complete readout for Barrel EMC Detector -- double di-jet reconstruction efficiency and total # mid-rapidity jets and 0 • L2 trigger Algorithms being developed to enhance di-jet//0 samples
STAR Official Request and Time Schedule • STAR Collaboration strongly supports all pp RUN6 • STAR estimates 90/30 pb-1 delivered/sampled • 2 weeks cool down + 2 weeks CAD ramp up +1 week STAR trigger/detector calibration • 19 weeks PHYSICS running resulting in 10/20 pb-1 transverse/longitudinal sampled • Interested in devoting a few days to higher energy beam tests • Request for Jet Target run concurrently with CNI • If pp goals are met early STAR would request AuAu at injection or lower energy for elliptic flow studies/comparisons with SPS
