HOW TO TALK SO CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES WILL LISTEN Advice to Citizen Review Panels
Think about recommendations that are focused and specific in their impact You probably won’t influence the activities of a major state agency without some “history” of workable ideas
Do your research before you make recommendations CPS agencies want information from informed sources Attend all meetings, go to training
Be considerate and thoughtful, listen to all sides of an issue Objectivity is a real plus! People with personal grievances should not be allowed to dominate a panel.
Include comments that are supportive of the good activities and policies of CPS Not everything is wrong or in need of improvement CPS leaders can be motivated by compliments as well as criticism
Be an active partner with CPS in the process of change Find a program to build on and attach yourself to new initiatives
Remember to help CPS by advocating for adequate state funding Child protection investigators want to provide services to children. If the state budget continues to cut community services or if workers are laid-off, it becomes increasingly difficult to do a good job.
Child abuse is a complex problem. • Try to stay focused on solutions. • Think about ways to promote collaboration and cooperation. • Ask for a meeting with the CPS Director • Be ready to listen and discuss.
When CPS accomplishes something you recommended, be sure to offer thanks and congratulations! Some projects stall or flounder or change before they finally succeed. BUT, don’t forget where you started and what happened along the way to the end result. We all like to take a few moments to savor our accomplishments.
