What kind of media institution may distribute your product and why? Lionsgate Films
Distribution and Institution • The distribution of a film is the process of which a movie is made available to an audience by a film distributor. This may be done in a variety of ways; for example, with a theatrical release, a home entertainment release or a television program for broadcast syndication and may include digital distribution. • Institution is any company or organization that produces, distributes or exhibits films. The BBC makes films with their BBC Films arm; Channel4's Film Four produces films, Working Title also produce films, as does Vertigo Films.
Lionsgate films • Lionsgate Films is a North American film production-distribution company, a subsidiary of Lions Gate Entertainment. It is the biggest and most successful independent film distributor-studio in North America. Its main focus is on foreign and independent films, and is perhaps best known for distributing films that are too controversial for the large American companies like Fahrenheit 9/11 and American Psycho. Lionsgate has its own record label and music publishing company in the form of Lionsgate Music and Publishing. Lionsgate Music established a joint venture with music publishing company Sony Music Australia. Lionsgate Television produced series like The Dead Zone, Five Days to Midnight, Weeds, Nurse Jackie, Boss, Tyler Perry's House of Payne and the Emmy Award-winning Mad Men. • The fact that they’re independent means they can distribute various types of films with different production companies and target audiences. This means they could be an ideal distributor for our thriller film. Lionsagte have a reputation for distributing quite a few horror films such as American Psycho and Saw. In addition to this they don’t really distribute many British films or low budget niche films. Our film is a low budget British thriller film for a general mainstream market. Lionsgate films can be quite niche, but generally have a larger audience than we expect for our film. That’s why we decided that Lionsgate, being an American distributor for larger scale films than ours, were the right institution for our media product.
