Road Maps Strategy ROAD MAP I: Funds> 30% w.r.t. 7FP Associationsmust continue to be the SPINE of the fusion program Secure ITER operation with a suitable accompanying program (EU SAT, JT60SA, others) and training of scientist DEMOconstruction anticipated at reduced risk with agressive R&D both in physics and technology,Eu-Satelliteconceived to be transformed inCTFin a II stage orDEMO as CTF IFMIFkey element but must not delay the DEMO construction schedule Industry could be strongly involved in DEMO design and feasibility studies CCE-FU WS on Road Map 8FP

  6. DEMO & IFMIF Itis essential that DEMO construction starts few years after the ITER DT operation (2028?), in order to have it ready within 2040. This schedule has to be kept unchanged and in this regard the decision to build IFMIF should be not further delayed. Possible way to foster the nuclear data base creation is to upgrade existing 14 MeV facilities, for tests up to few dpa, and push forward the modelling activities to be benchmarked as predictive tools. To keep this schedule, other intermediate facility between IFMIF and DEMO are not thinkable (not less than 15 years delay would be introduced), thereby: either EU-SAT upgrade in CTF (RMI) or DEMOhas to operate as CTF (RMII) Moreover, other international partners have already planned CTF experiments just after the start of ITER CCE-FU WS on Road Map 8FP

  8. JET JET, in the European scenario, can contribute with the ITER Like Wall. JET is certainly valuable for broadening the database on other physics issues Butthe cost to benefit ratio of JET experiments should be evaluated in comparison with equivalent experimental activities that can be carried out on other experimental facilities (e.g. ASDEX-UP, and later on JT60SA and EU SAT) Thereby, it seems worthy to consider JET operating until 2015 for the completion of the EP2 and DT phases (assuming DT would be scientifcally significative and technically affordable according to EP2 results) CCE-FU WS on Road Map 8FP

  9. TRAINING Training is crucial for keeping at adequate level the scientific and technology community. Facilities and high level courses (PhD, Masters) are essential. Training on facilities possible in JET up to 2015, in ASDEX-UP,JT60SA & EU SAT afterwards. Possibly, collabortaion with others machine like KSTAR and EAST should be considered. CCE-FU WS on Road Map 8FP

RFX scientific mission • is evolving to adapt to the needs of the ITER era (objectives 2, 3 & 4): • Bridging to tokamak and stellaratorto analyze key fusion issues and support ITER development • in a flexible device, using the same tools and language • in a wider and unexplored region, so strengthening fusion predictive capabilities • Exploration and assessment of the RFP potential at high plasma current as fusion concept • Educating a new generation of fusion scientists with practical training on a real device in a multidisciplinary (physics/engineering) environment Overarching mission: serve the community with a goal-oriented experiment till ITER/EU Satellite are close to start (exploitationoftokamak & 3D physics) CCE-FU WS on Road Map 8FP

FAST: a Candidate Eu Sat for ITER exploitation & DEMO design FAST is aimed at securing the exploitation of ITER, and to anticipate early DEMO design & construction complementing capabilities and missions of JT60-SA. and conceived for: working in a dimensionless parameter range as close as possible to that of ITER (key for physics integration) operating as test bed for ITER and DEMOscenarios investigating, to the largest possible extent, the key ITER operational issues: ELMs, PWI, Wall Load, Heating coupling exploring innovative solutions for the first wall/divertor, such as full-tungsten plasma facing components and advanced liquid metal divertor target; CCE-FU WS on Road Map 8FP

Concluding Remarks So far the success of the fusion program relies on the excellent job made by Associations in the frame of Euratom Program Besides, Association contribution amplified the Commission funds by a factor > 3. New EU Satellite very beneficial for the achievement of the final target Involvement of Industry has been of crucial importance for making possible ITER construction This scheme should be maintened also for now on, even reinforcing the role of industry that in turn will need the Association R&D still for long long time CCE-FU WS on Road Map 8FP
