Society for Research on Nicotine & Tobacco • Founded in the US 10 years ago • Principal international society for researchers on tobacco dependence • Has about 1000 members 1000 in the US 100-130 in Europe remainder spread across the world • Membership includes preclinical and clinical researchers, policy makers etc • Has a European affiliate – SRNT Europe
Aims of the Society • To sponsor scientific meetings and publications fostering the exchange of information on nicotine and tobacco. • To encourage scientific research on public health efforts for the prevention and treatment of tobacco use. • To provide a means by which legislative, governmental, regulatory and other public agencies can obtain expert advice and consultation on nicotine and tobacco.
Organisation • Activities overseen an elected board of governors • Run by an executive board which includes a member from elected by the European membership • A number of committees that oversee various activities of the Society
Principal Activities • Annual conference – generally held in February or March in the US • European conference – generally held in September or October • Publication of a peer-reviewed journal – Nicotine & Tobacco Research – that covers all aspects of the Society’s remit
Other Activities • Training programmes • Global out-reach programme • Information resource for government and other bodies
