MEETING THE CHALLENGES OF CLIMATE CHANGE A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE Louis D’Amore IIPT President & Founder E-mail: ljd@iipt.org Website: http://www.iipt.org
“Climate change is the pre-eminent geopolitical and economic issue of the 21st century. It rewrites the global equation for development, peace and prosperity.” U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon2009 Summit on Climate Change
The scientific evidence is clear • 2010 and 2011 two of the warmest years on record • First decade of 21st Century warmest on record • Arctic sea-ice cover 2010 lowest on record • Oceans are warming • Effecting people – economies – and ecosystems
Extreme Weather events • Floods • Heat Waves and Forest Fires • Drought
Consequences Weather related disasters cause on average each year more than • 100,000 deaths • $100 billion in economic losses • 20 million people displaced
Oxfam warns of West Africa drought 'catastrophe‘ Urgent action is needed to stop drought in West Africa's Sahel region turning into a humanitarian disaster affecting 13 million people, Oxfam says.
“Clearly, we are endangering all species on earth. We are endangering the future of the human race.” Rajendra Pachauri IIPC Chair
Ecosystems • 30% of species will be at high risk of extinction with 1.5 to 2.5 degrees centigrade increase in temperature • 40% of world’s economy and 80% of needs of the poor are derived from biological resources. • Humanity is using resources and emitting waste (particularly carbon dioxide from fossil fuel burning) at a rate 52 percent faster than the Earth can sustain • More than 83 percent of humanity living in countries where demand nature exceeds what the country’s ecosystems can renew
Water Security • 3 billion people live in areas where water demand is greater than supply • 5 billion will live in water stressed areas by 2050
Food Security • African nations dominate Food Security Risk Index • US$ 7 billion a year required to reduce climate impacts on agriculture in developing countries • Less than 1.5 days of global military expenditures
Threats to Health More than 70,000 people died in weather related deaths in 2010 • Heat waves – cyclones • Transmission of diseases from mosquitoes – ticks • Forest fires – intense rainfalls and flooding • Drought and Reduction in food supplies • Malnutrition and ability to resist disease
