  3. What does Morphology study? • Words have internal structure, which is rule-governed • These rules are the object of study of MORPHOLOGY • Study of the morphemes and the rules combining them

  4. What is a morpheme? • “smallest unit of linguistic meaning” • How many morphemes? dog dogs worked beautifully agree

  5. Bound x Free Morpheme • What is a free morpheme? Give examples. • What is a bound morpheme? Give examples.

  6. Bound morphemes (affixes) • Prefixes (e.g., re-; over-; super-; anti-) • Suffixes (e.g., -ish; -ness; -ly) • Infixes (midde) • Circumfixes (attached both initially and finally)

  7. Derivational Morphology • Unbelievable Un + believe + able ROOT: believe STEM: believable WORD: unbelievable Derivational Morphology: morphemes are added in a fixed order. This order reflects the hierarchical structure of the word.

  8. Derivational morphology • Unsystematic 1 – system 2 – system + atic = systematic 3 – un + systematic = unsystematic The root “system” is closer to “atic” than it is to “un”. “Un” is connected to “systematic” and not to “system”
