Ethnic Minorities Seek Equality • Latino population increased 60’s and 70’s • Mexican movement (Chicano) most active • Caesar Chavez helped migrant farm workers • UFW – United Farm Workers • Asian Americans – compensation for WWII • JACL – Japanese American Citizens League • 1959- Hawaii granted statehood – helped self image
Native American Struggles • Much suffering on reservations for years • White society viewed them as one group • Land claims a key issue • AIM– American Indian Movement – autonomy • Standoffs w/gov’t. – Alcatraz; Wounded Knee 1973 (site of Sioux massacre in 1890) • Gradual legislation giving control over education, land, water rights, etc.
The Environmental Movement • Roots in progressive era (T.Roosevelt) • Rachel Carson – wrote about chemicals in air/water, DDT, human responsibility to care for env. • Nuclear concerns – NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Comm.) • Earth Day – April 22, 1970 • EPA – Environmental Protection Agency • Clean Air Act/Clean Water Act • Conflicts with big business • Consumer movement – Ralph Nader – Unsafe at Any Speed, auto industry dangers
