Community Service • Fundación BaliaAn NGO organization in which you can work with immigrants usually assisting in a classroom environment • Helsinki España An NGO organization allows students to volunteer with Spanish university students in primary and high school classroom environment and/or research projects. This program invites all students (regardless of level of Spanish) to participate. • WWOOF España For people who want to work on an organic farm. In return for volunteer help, WWOOF offers food, accommodation and opportunities to learn about organic lifestyles.

Registration FAQ’s UPON ARRIVAL IN MADRID: • Spanish level: Mandatory on-line placement test for ALL students without NYU/college level course record. • Once in Madrid, Prof. Isabel Pereira will help you with any further language placement questions. • Remember: You can make changes to your schedule during ADD/DROP (You may be on a waitlist for a course, not to worry!) • Please note: you will have to get clearance for ALL registration changes from Prof. Anjouli Janzon/ Prof. Isabel Pereira. • Classes are on Monday’s through Thursday’s • No class on Fridays

9. Courses NYU Madrid Attendance Policy Dear Student, Every professor at NYU Madrid outlines the participation requirements governing his/her course. Class participation precludes attendance and compliance with classroom etiquette, (i.e. showing up on time, being attentive, no eating during class, no emailing during class and no disruptive behavior). A high score for class participation is awarded to those students who contribute to class discussion in a significant way. If you are unable to attend class, please inform the Office of Student Life (Caridad or Megan at 91 590 2925). **Please note that academic work can ONLY be made up if you have an official medical excuse, meaning a doctor’s certificate** All absences, medical or otherwise, will inevitably affect your participation grade – if you are not there, you cannot participate. Please keep this in mind when making travel plans that conflict with your course schedule and when engaging in an active social life.

10. Billing • According to the NYU Bursar, Summer 2011 term bills are scheduled to be issued the week of April 18th. Payment is due by May 9th. • You must be registered in order to receive a bill. Students not registered by April 18th will obviously receive a bill at a later time and it will be due at a later date.

Arrival Information • Students are expected to arrive in Madrid on : Thursday, June 2nd • Transportation from the Madrid airport to the city center will be reserved ONLY for students who provide arrival information AND arrive within the designated time periods and terminal: Terminal 1 : from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. • It may take 45 minutes to one hour for customs & baggage claim. • The NYU chartered bus will take you to the city center, from where you will take a taxi to your housing assignment. (It should cost no more than 15€) • If you are arriving at a different time, you must make your own transportation arrangements. • Information about taxis & public transport will be emailed to you closer to your departure. For privacy and security, neither NYU nor NYU Madrid can or will provide your information to anyone who attempts to contact you through us - including parents!

14. Arrivals Entry Date: In principle, the entry date to your housing is Thursday, June 2nd, the student arrival day. For those of you living in an apartment, you can contact your landlord to enter earlier. Contact NYU Madrid’s Housing Coordinator at: madrid.housing@nyu.edu

Orientation – June 3 & 4 Please arrive at 9:30 a.m. for your orientation session followed by a NYU-hosted Paella luncheon Keep In Mind • Bring your ORIGINAL passport (Not a copy) • Summer extra-curricular activities are held on Tuesdays in June & July. Mandatory activities: Prado visit & a cultural conference • We will help you get settled Classes begin on Monday, June 6th.

16. Housing & Meals • Housing applications are due by April 30th • Housing assignments will be e-mailed ONLY to your NYU account shortly before departure. NYU Madrid guarantees Homestays. The other option is shared apartments (NOT NYU housing) Once accepted, all housing assignments and meal plans are final. 18. Inside Homestays If you have any questions about housing in Madrid, please contact Megan Jones mmj3@nyu.edu It usually is NOT a nuclear family, rather a Señora (housemother). This is NYU Madrid guaranteed housing. Upon arrival, pay rent in cash (Euros) for the proportional part of the month of June. For the month of July, you pay up until the day you move out. No checks or credit cards accepted! If you choose “kitchen rights”, do not expect family contact. Remember: You are a paying guest, but nonetheless a “guest”. Be courteous. Be open to a new culture and different food !!!

19. Inside Apartments If you have any questions about housing in Madrid, please contact Megan Jones mmj3@nyu.edu NYU can ONLY serve as the intermediarybetween you and the landlord. You sign a lease with the landlord, therefore you are subject to the terms of the lease. This is NOT NYU Madrid housing! Summer Rentals are based on DAILY RATES. Upon arrival you will have to pay for 44 days (duration of the program) plus one month security deposit (in CASH Euros - NO personal checks). Make sure you have enough Euros on you. We recommend that you get the initial money for rent by changing travelers checks (AMERICAN EXPRESS is best) at the airport. We do NOT recommend apartments to students with little Spanish.

If possible have a back up credit/debit card • Contact your bank, notifying them that you will be abroad, and inquiring about the associated costs for using your ATM card while abroad • Make sure that you have a 4-digit PIN that will work abroad (no letters, just numbers) • No Discover Card or HSBC ATMs are accepted

The City • Truly the city that never sleeps: “Madrid’s vitality and character will soon have you hooked.” • Velázquez’s classics at the Prado are just down the street from Madrid’s throbbing cultural center. • Weather: One of Europe’s highest capitals, Madrid enjoys a crisp, dry air year round with a strong sun and generally little rain. • June: 75-85ºF midday • July: 85-100ºF midday • Evenings: 70-80ºF • Madrid, as all European cities, is expensive. Students still find that it is not quite as expensive as NYC. • Although it is a huge city, it has preserved its little, quaint neighborhoods. • Madrileños are friendly, welcoming folks. 24. Health & Safety • The NYU Madrid Student Life Department can refer you to mental health resources available in Madrid. • Bring a supply of any prescriptionmedications that you absolutely need. Health & Safety NYU provides you with coverage by HTH International Health Insurance HTH provides access to health and mental health services to students studying abroad without any co-pays or up front expenses (only if students use network providers). The NYU Student Health Center will bear the costs of this plan for every student who has paid the annual student health fee. Therefore, there is no additional cost to students for enrolling in the plan. Students should be expecting an email regarding the services provided by HTH and one from HTH directly with registration instructions. This should also be the address listed on your luggage tags, always.

32. Packing Tips • Pack Light & Avoid Shipping! You will have to carry all your luggage and TAXIS will NOT take more than two bags. • Electronics • Only bring electronics that come with built-in converters like laptops, ipod, digital cameras, and some cell phone chargers. • You will likely need plug adaptors • Anything else is prohibited by NYU policy & can be purchased while in Madrid. • Remember to check air safety regulations to know what you can & cannot pack! Contact your airline. • Medication and Toiletries • Talk to your doctor before you leave and get enough of any prescription medications for the entire duration of your stay in Madrid. • Bring a written prescription with the chemical name for each of your medications • Stock up on over-the-counter products • Leave all prescription medication in the ORIGINAL packaging and pack some in carry-on. • Carry-on an overnight bag packed with everything you might need for at least two nights. Should your luggage be lost or delayed, you would have the essentials.
