The Influenza Module • Collaboration • Influenza Division • BioSense Program • Purposes • Combines traditional and new types influenza surveillance data sources • Present in a single application through maps and time series • Common format and user interface • State and local users have access to • National and regional level data • State-specific data • Deployed December 2007

  3. Timing of Influenza Module Updates • The data are updated twice a week • For example: • As of Monday, October 26 the module is current to Saturday, October 17 (week 41) • By mid-week, the BioSense data will be updated to Saturday, October 24 (week 42)

Traditional Influenza Data Sources • ILINet (Sentinel Provider Network) • % Influenza-like Illness (ILI) • WHO/National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS) • # positive influenza isolates by type/subtype; Percent positive • State and Territorial Epidemiologists Reports • No Activity, Sporadic, Local Activity, Regional, Widespread

Emergency Departments • Source of data: state/local health departments, hospital systems, individual hospitals • Chief complaints • 553 facilities reporting (approx. 12% of US ED visits) • Flu OR (Fever AND (Cough OR Upper Respiratory Infection)) • Final diagnosis (ICD-9-CM) • 206 facilities reporting • Flu OR (Fever AND (Cough OR Upper Respiratory Infection))

  6. DoD/VA Outpatient Clinics • Final diagnosis (ICD-9-CM) • 1,117 facilities reporting • Flu OR (Fever AND (Cough OR Upper Respiratory Infection))

  7. Antiviral Rx Data • Data source: RelayHealth, an electronic prescriptions claims services provider • 20,000 and 30,000 pharmacies report per week • Represents approximately 50% of anti-infective prescriptions across the U.S. • Limited to Rx covered by a third-party payer, such as an insurance company • Antiviral %: Ratio of influenza antiviral prescriptions to all anti-infective prescriptions • Includes all influenza antivirals: amantadine, rimantadine, oseltamivir, and zanamivir

LabCorp/Quest • Test types: • Antigen, PCR, Culture • 2,000-6,000 influenza test results during weeks with highest influenza activity • Lab Corp • Began testing for H1N1 in September 2009 • Not yet incorporated into influenza module • Quest • Began testing for H1N1 in July 2009 • Not yet incorporated into influenza module
