Community Outreach: Project Proposal Needs Assessment: • PMI Buffalo members expressed a desire to get involved in the community • Nonprofit organizations wanted to learn how to manage projects more efficiently Proposed solution: To engage in a project to create an ongoing program to bring project management knowledge to WNY nonprofits 08/2010

7. Project Management for Nonprofits Project Management for Nonprofits is an integrated program of training, mentoring and tools to help develop the project management skillset and best practice competency in our community organizations, and to help them achieve their project goals. 08/2010

Program Strategic Goals • Help community organizations manage their projects more effectively • Increase visibility of PMI Buffalo and the project management profession • Cultivate a community appreciation for project management best practices • Identify potential new members • Provide opportunities for chapter members to use their skills in a volunteer setting and earn re-certification credits 08/2010

The Project to Create the Program • Summer 2009: Concept and focus groups to create a plan • Fall 2009: Recruited a 14-member PMI leadership team • Winter 2009-2010: Designed and developed the program • Feb 2010: Application and selection of organizations and participants (Pilot Year funding by PMI Buffalo) • March 2010: Funding by PMI Educational Foundation • March-April: Training session 08/2010

13. Organization Application / Selection Process • Limited to 24 individuals per program cycle • One participant per organization (two allowed, space permitting) • 501(c)(3) organizations only • Participants selected based on demonstrated need and project merit 08/2010

15. Training (March /April 2010) • Mingus Associates, Inc. contracted for six half-day sessions (24 hours) of instruction • Specific to Nonprofit Organizations • Counts toward PMI certification requirement • BONUS: all participants received a free pass to one PMI Dinner Meeting 08/2010

16. The Toolbox • A compilation of electronic forms and templates in Word and Excel format • Reflect best practices in Project Management methodology • Supports Training Curriculum • Modified to address specific nonprofit needs 08/2010

17. Mentoring (Aug - Dec 2010 ) • 1-3 hours/week for 3-6 months, at a time you coordinate with your nonprofit counterpart • PMI Certified Mentors • Coaching through a named project • Mentoring vs. Doing 08/2010

Mentor Expectations • Preview the Mentor Guidelines • Contact your assigned organization set up a weekly schedule • Guide and Coach rather than Do • Submit a Mentor Quick Status at end of month • Attend a midpoint collaboration meeting (late October) • Attend a Lessons Learned session at the conclusion of the mentoring engagement • Have fun!  08/2010
