SPACE TRAVEL Past, present and future
Project Mercury • Ran from 1958-1963 • Goals of the mission were to • Orbit a manned spacecraft around earth • Study mans ability to function in space • Recover man and spacecraft
Mercury • The U.S. and Russia were in a race to explore space. Russia had beat the U.S. to the first successful flight of an artificial satellite with Sputnik in 1957. • Before attempting space travel with humans: fungus, monkeys and dogs were sent to space. • Potential Astronauts were subjected to extensive physical and psychological tests. • http://www-pao.ksc.nasa.gov/kscpao/history/mercury/flight-summary.htm
GEMINI • Ran from 1962-1968 • Goals • Have man in space for up to 2 weeks • To dock with orbiting vehicles • Perfect entering atmosphere and landing at specific spots.
Gemini • Gemini was named after the constellation consisting of twin stars because they manned flights would have a two man crew. • Titan rockets were used. • http://www-pao.ksc.nasa.gov/kscpao/history/gemini/flight-summary.htm
APOLLO • Ran from 1968-1972 • Goals: • Land humans on the moon and take them safely back to Earth.
APOLLO • While starting in tragedy (Apollo I astronauts were killed in a fire during a training exercise) The Apollo missions landed successfully on the moon 6 times. • The Apollo missions used the Saturn V rockets. • http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/history/apollo/index.html
The Shuttle Missions • Ran from 1981-present • Goals • To launch/repair satellites. • Perform various scientific experiments in space.
Shuttle missions • While shuttles are not designed to go as far as the rockets, nor land on the moon, the shuttle missions have gathered valuable information from their experiments and launched satellites for many nations. • Shuttles include Columbia, Atlantis, Endeavor, and Discovery • http://www-pao.ksc.nasa.gov/kscpao/shuttle/missions/missions.html
Space Stations • Skylab 1973-1979 Could only hold 3 men at a time.http://www-pao.ksc.nasa.gov/kscpao/history/skylab/skylab.htm • Mir 1994-1998 http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/history/shuttle-mir/history/h-t-short.htm • International Space Station 1998-present http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/history/station/index.html
