  2. Early in the morning... • Caecilius usually arose at dawn • His slaves got up even earlier

  3. Caecilius’ Clothing • He put on his... • tunica (a long T-shirt) • toga (a 9-yard long sheet) • sandals

  4. Early in the morning... • After he dressed, he washed his face and hands • He visited the barber later, when he went to the forum

  5. Metella’s Clothing • tunica (slip) • stola (dress) • palla (shawl) • sandals

  6. Slave girls helped Metella with her • hairstyle--elaborate, often dyed • jewelry--necklaces, bracelets, pins, and earrings • make-up--powder, blush, mascara

  7. Breakfast “ientaculum”--bread and water

  8. Caecilius the Patron • First duty of the day: to receive greeting from his “clientes” • He was their “patronus” or patron • The morning greeting of visitors was called the “salutatio”

  9. Forum Then Caecilius went to the forum, or business center

  10. “prandium”--meat or fish and fruit lunch

  11. Nap-time! • After lunch, Caecilius took a short rest • Slaves worked throughout the day

  12. The Baths After his lunch and nap, Caecilius went to the public baths...

  14. Dining-room Triclinium--held a “mensa”--table-- with 3 couches around it Diners leaned on their left elbows Slaves and children ate sitting up

  15. Tableware Diners ate food with fingers or spoons Slaves cut meat into small pieces Forks were not used by Romans

  16. Famous Latin Phrase • “ab ovo usque ad mala” • “From the egg all the way to the apples” • i.e., from appetizer to dessert

  17. A Roman Dinner Dessert: “secunda mensa”--fruit and cheese Appetizer: “gustatio”--eggs and fish Wine was served throughout the meal Main course: meat dishes
