  1. Henlopen Soccer Club Recreational Soccer Program – U6 Age Group

  2. U6 Age Group ROLE OF THE U6 COACH The role of the coach in the U6 age group is as facilitator, friendly helper, organizer, and motivator.  The coach should be patient, enthusiastic, and imaginative.  The coach should experiment with fun activities that include all players, if possible.  The environment and the activities are more important than technical coaching is at this level.

  3. Characteristics of a u6 Soccer Player • Short attention span • Individually oriented…egocentric • Sensitive…Easily bruised psychologically • Love to use their imagination…pretend • Tend to only one task at a time • Can process small bits of information  • Immature understanding of time and space relations • Constantly in motion • No sense of pace (full speed ahead) • Easily fatigued with rapid recovery • Eye/hand and eye/foot coordination is primitive • Can balance on good foot • Catching skills are not developed • Love to run, jump, fall and roll • Boys and girls are quite similar psychologically and physically • Love to show off • Little or no real concern for team activities  • Tend to parallel play…play next to but not with a friend or teammate  • Influential people in their life -MOM & DAD  • Like to mimic goofy actions

  6. Game Day Format 1.) Your team will share a field each morning, with a different team each week. It will be either A, B, C, D, E, or F. (Field map is located on the next slide.) Your one hour time slot will begin at 9:45 AM and end at 10:45 AM. The schedule will be posted at the concession stand each week. 2.) You will have a mini ball bag with pinnies, a couple balls, and some cones. You will find this bag in one of the goals on your assigned field. The u4 coaches were instructed to leave the bag in one of the goals. Please note that the supplies are limited. You will have to share with the other team on your field. 3.) Make sure you enlist the help of your parents. Please make sure you encourage your players to bring a size 3 or size 4 ball, water, and snack. 4.) The first 30 minutes will consist of: • Stretch/Warm Up • Team Activity/Game (See Previous Slide) 5.) The second 30 minutes will consist of a game with team you are sharing a field with: Your game will be as structured as 5v5. You will have to make substitutions to make sure all of your players get to play. You will have to provide guidance to your players on how you want to organize your game. SUGGESTION: Group your team into groups of five, make substitutions every 5 minutes. We also ask that you coordinate with the opposing coach. 6.) AT THE END OF THE HOUR: We ask that each coach bring a goal to the blue shed. Our rec coordinators will put them away. Please bring your bag with balls, pinnies, and cones. 7.) If a coach cannot run their weekly game here is the protocol: • Ask your parents to fill in for you. Try and give your team plenty of notice of your absence. • If you cannot find a replacement coach. Please contact our rec coordinators and one of them will cover your game. (Contact info for rec coordinators can be found on slides eight and nine.)
