You can’t make me!’ Jonas sobbed and shouted and pounded the bed with his fists.” (pg. 152) In Lois Lowry’s book, The Giver, a young boy named Jonas grows up in a society in which everything is controlled by the government. Jonas has no choices and must go on a journey that changes everything he knows about his world. In Jonas’ journey he bravely experiences the Call to Adventure, the Road of Trials and the Ultimate Boon.

  4. Body Paragraph #1 Describe how Jonas experiences The Call to Adventure. Use TS, T, 2 CD 4CM and CS

  5. The Call to Adventure is the part of the Hero’s Journey when the Hero first realizes his life is going to change and Jonas experiences this in two ways. For example, on page 24 Jonas says, “There was absolutely nothing remarkable about that apple. He had tossed it back and forth between his hands a few times, then thrown it again to Asher. And again- in the air for an instant only – it had changed.”Here, Jonas experiences something that is completely new to him. He realizes that his life is going to change because nothing like this has ever happened to him before. In addition, on page 57, Jonas is absolutely stunned when the Chief Elder skips his number and moves on to twenty. Jonas begins to feel like he has done something terribly wrong because no one has ever been skipped before. Panicked he doesn’t know what to do and realizes that his life is has changed for the worse. As a result Jonas realizes that his life is going to change at least twice in during his journey in the Giver.

  6. Conclusion: Say your thesis in a different way, summarize your essay, and end with a final thought.

  7. Conclusion During his courageous Journey, Jonas experiences the Call to Adventure, the Refusal of the Call, and the Ultimate Boon. First, when Jonas is skipped by the chief elder and sees the apple change is his Call to Adventure. Then Jonas experiences the Refusal of the Call when he refuses to go home after a painful memory and seeing his father kill a child. Finally Jonas experiences the Ultimate Boon when he saves Gabriel and reaches elsewhere. Ultimately Jonas survives and escapes to freedom.
