  3. Council of Nicea Summoned in A.D. 325 by the Holy Roman Emperor Constantine. Gathering of bishops from across the empire. One of their chief issues of concern and discussion was the Arian controversy.

  4. Arianism Promoted by Arius, a presbyter of the Alexandrian church in Egypt. Taught that, “There was a time when the Son was not”

  5. Arius: Villain or Reckless Reactionary? Arius' doctrine seemed to be a reaction against what he perceived as the preaching of Sabellianism (modalism). Modalism: The one God manifests Himself in three forms or modes: Father, Son, Spirit. There are not three distinct persons. Modalism is held by Oneness Pentecostals today.

  6. A Matter of Substance The Council of Nicea rejected Arius' teaching and labeled him a heretic. Arius said Jesus was of “like substance” with the Father: homoiousios The Council said that Jesus was of the “same substance” as the Father: homoousios

And when I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God.” Revelation 22:8-9

  23. In Conclusion “Is the task of Christology complete? By no means! We cannot content ourselves with merely repeating the words and phrases of the past till the day of [Christ's coming]...Besides, Christology constantly faces new challenges and each such challenge both changes and enriches us. There is the need, in every age, to discharge afresh Christology's obligation to preach. How do we translate homoousios and perichoresis into the plain English of today? The fourth century theologians ransacked their world for appropriate images. We must find ours in the world of singularities, quarks, black holes and electromagnetism...The task goes on then. Generations to come will ask different questions and use different language. In that sense Christology never arrives.
