June 26, 2007 WASHINGTON- U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao today announced an award of $3million in grants to six organizations, including $495,600 to Neosho County Community College, to prepare workers for careers in long-term care.
The grant to Neosho County Community College will target Certified Nurse Aides (CNA) and Nutrition Assistants in facilities and home-based care settings in Neosho, Anderson, Franklin, and Douglas Counties in Kansas.
The NCCC initiative will recruit among high school students and retired senior citizens, along with implementing strategies to retain incumbent CNA’s. Courses will be taught during the traditional school day, allowing the students to work in the field during evenings and weekends.
Two full-time Health Occupation Coordinators will be hired to work in high schools and teach direct care courses. Workers over the age of 55 will be trained to become nutrition assistants.
