BIG IDEA • What were the key factors that lead to British Colonies in America declaring independence from the British?
New Colonial Identity • Colonies were formed for different reasons • Religion • Economic opportunity • Political freedom • They began to unify • New England Confederation union of colonies that formed to defend one another from Indian attacks • Albany Plan of Union attempt to regulate colonial taxes and raise an army (ultimately failed)

The Distance Grows • British Government: • Imposed taxes on colonists to pay for wars • Stamp Act – colonies had to buy stamps for any piece of paper that was used (stamp revenues went to British Government) • Colonists were TAXED but not REPRESENTED • Controlled colonial trade: • Products imported from other countries were heavily taxed
Reaction • Colonists: • believed the British government was exercising tyranny – rule that ignores the welfare of the people • Stopped buying some British goods (boycott) • Attacked British soldiers (Boston Massacre) • Destroyed British goods (Boston Tea Party)
The Colonies Unite • Research the 1st and 2nd Continental Congresses and be prepared to report on the following for each. • What was it? • Whodid it consist of? • Whydid they meet?
The Continental Congresses • 1st C.C. • What? – Meeting of colonial delegates – colonial representatives • Who? – 1 delegate from 12 colonies (not Georgia) • Why? -- dispute British policies and boycott British goods • 2nd C.C. • What? – meeting of delegates • Who? -- 12 colonies (same) • Why? – draft the Declaration of Independence
