Warm-up • Write down two positives and two negatives for living in the city.
Reminders • Debate Monday March 28th • Test Tuesday March 29th
Question of the Day • Why did hundreds of thousands of people move from cities to suburbs in the middle of the 20th century?
Vocabulary • Suburbs- A residential region (where people live) around a city. • GI Bill- a bill that provided college or vocational education for returning World War II veterans (commonly referred to as G.I.s) as well as one year of unemployment compensation. It also provided many different types of loans for returning veterans to buy homes and start businesses.
GI Bill • G. I. Bill • The GI Bill was created in 1944 to prevent WWII veterans from protesting. • Among other things, it paid for any veteran’s entire education-college for free! • The GI Bill also loaned money for a very good rate-making it easier to buy a house! • Impact • Schools increased employment. • More people than ever before went to college. • The work force increased expectations for workers. • Allowed more people to own homes and leave the city.
US Interstate Highway System • In 1956 Congress gave millions of dollars to redo the highways that connected America. • Impacts of a better, faster highway system: • Go faster • More accidents • Pollution • More gas • More cars • Traffic • Live further from work
Baby Boom • Baby Boom • Because of soldiers returning from war, birth rates increased during the 1950’60’s period. • Over 76 million American children were born during this period. • Baby boomers were coddled by parents and lived in protected, wealthy, suburban lives • Greater need for education, jobs, housing
What Caused the Growth of the Suburbs? • Baby boom • GI Bill • Interstate Highway System
Life in the 1950s • Listen to this song and read the lyrics. We will be discussing what this song demonstrates about life in America in the 1950s.
Practice! • Why was the GI Bill passed? • What were the two main things that the GI Bill did? • What was an impact of the GI Bill? • What happened to the birth rate after WWII? • Why did it go up? • What is an impact of the baby boom? • What did Congress do in 1956? • Why does this matter? • What were the 3 things that lead to the growth of the suburbs?
Let’s push our thinking • What do you think are the long term effects of suburbanization? • Is suburbanization part of the American Dream or homogenization (grouping people who are similar together) of American culture? • Is suburbanization a positive migration in American history or a negative? Explain
Create an AD! • Now you own your own construction company making homes in the suburbs in the 1950s • Create an ad that will convince people to move out of the city • Give at least one PUSH and one PULL reason! • Minimum 3 colors
