  1. The Veldt Imagery and the five senses

  2. Imagery • Definition: the author’s use of descriptive or figurative language to create a picture in the reader’s mind. • - Can you see/hear/feel what the author is writing? • - Use your five senses to engage with the text • Examples: “empty as a jungle glade at hot high noon” line 25 • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_WeybKZLJA&feature=related • Close your eyes and visualize where you are and how you feel as this video plays – then share with person next to you

  3. Individual work • Your task: • Highlight/underline words or phrases which use the five senses to give you a personal response to the text • Smells - Feel/touch • Sounds - Colours/word pictures (sight) • Tastes/foods • (take 15 minutes to explore the text on your own, quietly) • Write down imagery you find on your graphic organizer • (don’t forget to use line numbers for reference)

  4. Share Discoveries • Form groups of 2-3 • Share your discoveries with each other • Work collaboratively (use other people’s insights) • Record any additional information in your graphic organizer • You have 10 minutes to do this

  5. Group Debrief

  6. Individual work • Fill in your Personal Response worksheet • Use information from your graphic organizer • Focus on what you thought/felt while reading • E.g. I felt that the sense of smell was most important. I could smell the lions’ fur. It reminded me of when I went to the zoo when I was a kid. I was afraid the lion would break out of the cage and attack me… • You need to show your completed Graphic Organizer and your Personal Response worksheet before you can leave
