Consequences • Every year an estimated 1,400 students die (NIAAA, 2004) • Drowning, suicide, criminal and accidents • Every year an estimated 6000, 000 injuries occur (NIAAA, 2004) • Every year 70,000 cases of sexual assault are reported (NIAAA, 2004) • Fires, Vandalism, Domestic Violence, Fighting, Theft and other criminal activity • Property values • Negative Publicity • Student retention and post graduate degrees • Irreversible damage to the developing brain • Impair learning and social skills • Drain on Social Services

Key Findings and Assessment • 78.8 % of US students have used alcohol in the last year • 78.7% of WV students used alcohol in 2004 (reference group of 4,380) • 77.6% of WV students used alcohol in 2006 (reference group of 4,583) • 84.0 % of US students used alcohol in 2007 (reference group of 59,668) (Data gathered from the CORE Survey)

Key Findings and Assessment • 62.5 % of US underage students have consumed alcohol in the last 30 days • 64.5 % of WV students in 2004 had consumed alcohol in the last 30 days • 62.7 % of WV students in 2006 had consumed alcohol in the last 30 days • 71.4 % of US students in 2007 had consumed alcohol in the last 30 days (Data gathered from the CORE Survey)

Key Findings and Assessment • 39.9 % of US students reported binge drinking in the previous two weeks • 44.2 % of WV students reported binge drinking in the previous two weeks in 2004 • 43.4 % of WV students reported binge drinking in the previous two weeks in 2006 (Data gathered from the CORE Survey)

  6. Norming • 90.7 % of students believe the average student drinks once a week • 34.8 % of students would prefer NOT to have alcohol at parties (Data gathered from the CORE Survey)

West Virginia Demographics • 87,066 students enrolled in public institutions (2007) • 22 institutions • 11,137 students enrolled in private institutions (2007) • 9 institutions • 1.8 million residents • Oldest populations per capita • Leading the nation in per capita enrollment but we graduate under the national average • 70% of WV students will finish • Combining WVU and Marshall University- 40% of students will graduate in 5years (WV HEPC)

  8. National Data • Nationally, on average an IHE will spend $2,100 per students for recruitment • (Key Concepts and Principles for Promoting.., E. Anderson, Ph.D.) • 37% of first time entrants in a 4 year institution will never earn a 4-year degree • (Tinto, 1986, 1993) • 15% will eventually earn a 2-year degree • (Tinto, 1986, 1993)
