Purpose of the Workshop • Define advocacy and identify your role in the process for agricultural education. • Explore the advocacy planning process by developing a plan to address a challenge or opportunity that currently faces agricultural education in your program.
What is advocacy? • Write down your thoughts; • What do you believe to be the purpose and/or definition of advocacy? • What are some positive beliefs you currently have about advocacy? • What are some negative beliefs you currently have about advocacy?
What are some reasons we advocate? • There are a variety of outcomes for advocating including: • Change in the institutional policy and practice • Change in public attitudes or behavior • Change in the political process or system • Increased power or influence for a less influential group • Or a combination of some or all
Build Relationships • Collaboration • Communities • Teachers • Parents • Students • Administration • Advisory Committees • Foundation • Legislators (lobbying?) • Industry organizations & businesses
Determine the needs within your Ag Ed program • Identify what is currently being done and what currently exists? • What are some challenges or opportunities that are currently present? • Where is Ag Ed headed in the future?

Advocacy Planning 101 • Determine key audiences. • Primary • Secondary Who directly and indirectly influences these groups? • Determine what they know. • Determine how they receive their information.

Advocacy Planning 101 • Develop message points. • What do you want them to know? • Be clear and concise • Communication materials and promotion. • How will you best get this message across? • How should it be delivered?
Advocacy Planning 101 • Resources • What will you need to complete this plan? • Timeline • What is a reasonable timeline for ALL objectives to be completed?
Advocacy Planning 101 • Evaluation • How will you know if it worked? Example: Objective #- (list objective) Evaluation Questions What is your objective intending to measure? Include questions relevant to time, quantity, quality and etc.
Motivation for moving forward • Now that you have a plan in place, how do you motivate your stakeholders or “your advocates” to take action?
