Entrance Plaza Community Environment: The district is composed of manydifferent cultures representing students and families from various countries and languages. The from the outset of establishing the Project Goals the district was committed to embracing the community and involving the all to help define the goals and provide a facility that supported the community as a whole. Some of the primary goals are: Embracing and celebrating the cultural and ethnic diversity of this community To provide a ‘Welcoming Place” for the entire community To provide a Place for new immigrants to feel part of the community To provide a “Nurturing Environment and Place of Inclusion”
Aerial Community Environment: Make the campus and facilities accessible to the Community seven days a week Partnering with Ministry to develop and provide Community Use Spaces and collaborative partnerships for the facilities use Commitment to support local business with use of “BC Wood Initiative” in which the design and construction utilizes wood from local renewable forests Reintroducing the natural landscape reflecting the communities history and place
Neighborhood of Learning Learning Environment: The District developed and redefined the Educational Program Goals as part of defining this Project Program and Planning document. The “New Elementary School Model” was to include and incorporate the following within the New Design: Supporting individual Learner Needs with a Place which Embraces each student and family A learning environment which celebrates cultural diversity Partnerships with Community organizations Sustainable Learning environment which promotes and Teaches Sustainable Living Practices Healthy Learning Environments based on sustainable design enhancing the student experience and performance.
Neighborhoods of Learning Learning Environment: Promote Collaborative Learning and Instructional Environment and Spaces Provide Project Based Learning Spaces Diversity of Program space types to respond to individual learners needs Technology Driven Planning Flexible Spaces allow for the spaces to be redefined within the school day and into the future Include ‘Full-Day” Kindergarten and Pre-Kindergarten Programs
Sketch of Main Entrance Physical Environment : The planning and design was based on Goals established by the Students. Students ideas were shared and developed from their ‘sketches” and presentations. The primary goals of the design include: “Transparent Place for Learning” Learning environment and experience based on the “sharing” of student work, activities and the process of exploration A place which promotes and teaches Sustainable Living Practices Healthy learning environment through sustainable design A Building which presents its design and construction to the students to promote awareness of the built environment and design strategies Exposed building systems and utilization of “BC Wood” throughout Provide a strong connection to the outdoor learning environment
Rendering of Main Entrance Planning Process: The District demonstrated a deep commitment and considerable resources and time to establish and develop the Project Goals and objectives. The Planning process included involvement and input from over 150 individuals including students to develop the goals and planning considerations for this Project. The Program development and design for this design and construction completion included members from: Student interviews and participation Student presentation video sharing their Goals, Ideas and Designs (drawings) Project Web-Site for sharing project development information with the Community Community planning meetings including language translators Community presentations District’s Educational, Facilities, Business Services, Maintenance and Operations Departments Board of Education Members Community representatives including parents Citizens Oversight Committee Local business representatives
