General Remarks • Review went well • Strong support from MICE collaboration and MAP management • New committee members outside MAP and MICE collaborations, lots of good questions and suggestions • Cryostat design and drawing package; • Temperature margin and heat load margin; • Cooling circuit; • Instrumentation plan; • First cold-mass testing at Fermilab. • Lots of work ahead • Final report will be available by end of March, 2012 • Findings; • Comments; • Recommendations.
Key Review Comments • Temperature margin • 0.6 K is too small for 240 MeV/c; • Superconductor to Cu ratio? More turns? • Cooling circuit • Good; • A full scale testing before final cryostating would be prudent; • Adding a He gas make-up line; • Three cryocoolers should work (based on updated heat load calculations by SV). • Cryostat design • Drawing package is not ready for outside fabrication yet; • Further reviews by LBNL engineers, technicians and machine shop • Assessment of cryostat support due to force of the shielding wall at MICE hall • Instrumentation • Okay
Key Review Comments (cont’d) • Quench Protection • Consider to add heaters to the bobbin; • Decide how many sub-divisions for sequent MICE CC magnets; • Lead stabilizations; • Cold-diodes testing in B field and low temperature • First cold-mass testing at Fermilab • Interface documents; • Responsibilities of LBNL and Fermilab; • Update cool-down analysis (LBNL); • Testing plan (LBNL). • Consider possibility of testing the cold-mass in vertical orientation. • 2nd and 3rd coiling winding • Start winding after the first cold-mass testing
Progress after the Review • Quench protection and lead stabilization • AD and SV visited MIT (March 12-14) to work on the detailed engineering/mechanical design of the quench circuit and lead stabilization • Updated cool-down analysis (5 g/s) at LBNL • Updating cryostat drawings at LBNL • Cold diodes testing in progress at LBNL • Completed preliminary review and cost estimate of the CC cryostat fabrication and assembly at LBNL • Progress of the first cold-mass testing at Fermilab • Interface documents • Presentation by Ruben (this meeting)
Following the Review ChargeCryo-Design • Review and comment on the overall cooling circuit and overall cryo-design. • Temperature Margin • For the 240 MeV/c MICE operating configuration, the temp. margin (even in the nominal case) is too small (0.6K) and the likelihood for successful operation of the magnet is small • For the other MICE configurations the T margin is sufficient • The nominal temperature margin will REQUIRE the utmost care during planning, parts fabrication and assembly. • Re-access the peak T in the coil under all operation conditions • Cooling Cirucuit • Looks OK • A full-scale test (prior to assembling the final CCM) would be very prudent. • In Fermilab Solenoid Test Facility? • Control Heater • Should be mounted in top reservoir. • Re-evaluate need for the 3 parallel circuits • Amend Heat Load analysis to include heat due to charging, heater leads and liquid level probe leads • Revised numbers give us sense that 3 CCs will work • Update PID for the cooling circuit and show all outside connections • Add He gas make-up line. Alan Bross MICE CCM Pre-production review 2/29-3/1, 2012
Cryo-design • Shield • Validate that the single electrical circuit break on the thermal shield is adequate • We recommend the use of bumpers between 60K and 4K • Check MLI specification (both shield and cold-mass. • Vent Line • Redesign line to eliminate the unconstrained bellows Alan Bross MICE CCM Pre-production review 2/29-3/1, 2012
Cryostat Design • Review and comment on the Coupling Coil cryostat design in the following areas: • Validity of the overall design • Make sure that documentation is available to allow operation under appropriate UK codes. • Verify analysis of pressure safety of the He circuit and the vacuum vessel • Establish allowable stress criteria and document it. • Revisit the stress analysis of the cold-mass supports • Is the package suitable for outside fabrication • NO • Weldment assembly drawings detailed are not sufficient • Piece-part drawings are missing adequate tolerance (on the part & how individual parts are put into assemblies – tolerance stack-up). • Piece-part dimensions do not account for post machining steps • QA Procedures need to be improved • Travelers • Discrepancy reports & how it is mitigated? • Full-time US presence in China during parts fabrication is Highly Advisable (QC monitor) • Does the cryostat support all expected loads? • Magnetic forces due to Fe walls in the MICE hall have not been evaluated Alan Bross MICE CCM Pre-production review 2/29-3/1, 2012
Instrumentation Plan • Review and comment on the instrumentation plan • Looks OK from information presented. • Consider moving expansion joint on the cold end of the LL probe • Consider reducing the # of T sensors on the shield for later magnets • Consider adding a heater on the coil mandrel • For test • Add redundant level control heater Alan Bross MICE CCM Pre-production review 2/29-3/1, 2012
Quench Protection • Review and comment on the appropriateness of the planned quench protection system • Consider adding heaters to the bobbin to allow for active QP if needed • Needed for the test program in any event. • Bring to a conclusion as soon as possible the # of segments. Conservatism here is advised – go for the lowest possible voltage • Establish the Peak pressure in the He system during quench • Lead and bus protection is of paramount importance & should continue to be evaluated. • Cold diode assembly(ies)/module (as-built) needs to be tested in proper T and B environment(s). • Define system needed to protect magnet during power failure • Fast discharge? • Re-evaluate cold-mass thermo-mechanical stresses and deformations during the quench. • LTS leads and loops MUST be stabilized sufficiently. These areas need to be treated with extreme conservatism. Alan Bross MICE CCM Pre-production review 2/29-3/1, 2012
Note on Testing & Other • The test plan, documentation, detailed procedures, mechanical orientation need to be precisely defined. • Consider testing winding in vertical orientation • Having results from tests on first coil before starting the wind the second, is recommended • Re-evaluate the SC/Cu ration in the new SC order and its impact on magnet performance and operation. • Do not HTS leads in the Fermilab STF Alan Bross MICE CCM Pre-production review 2/29-3/1, 2012
Final Report • Follow format as before: • Findings • Comments • Recommendations • Asked for input from the committee within 2 weeks • The hope to have final edit in 1-2 weeks afterwards Alan Bross MICE CCM Pre-production review 2/29-3/1, 2012
