  2. Abstemious - ADJ • Eating and drinking in moderation; restricted to bare necessities • Models often must be abstemious in order to avoid gaining weight.

  3. Abstract - ADJ • Not concrete; theoretical • Numbers are abstract, but they can be represented by symbols.

  4. Abstruse - ADJ • Difficult to understand • Many people find higher mathematics to be an abstruse subject.

  5. Acclaim - Verb • Applaud; announce with great approval • The principal acclaimed the winner of the Best Student of the Year and then gave him a prize.

  6. Accolade - Noun • Award of merit • A Pulitzer Prize is one of thehighest accolades that a writer can receive.

  7. Acknowledge - Verb • Recognize; admit • Acknowledging our shortcomings is the first step to changing ourselves for the better.

  8. Acquiesce - Verb • Agree without protesting • Soldiers are expected to acquiesce to the orders of their superior officers.

  9. Adulation - Noun • Excessive flattery or admiration • Rock stars often receive widespread adulation for a short period of time.

  10. Adversary - Noun • Opponent • During World War II, Japan found that the United States was a more powerful adversary than it had thought it would be.

  11. Adversity • Hardship; misfortune • Some people believe that adversity improves the character, making one a stronger and more understanding person.

  12. Advocate – Verb or Noun • Argue in favor of; Person who argues for someone else • The government of the United States advocates democracy as the best political system for all countries.

  13. Aesthetic - ADJ • Pertaining to art or beauty • Aesthetics is a branch of philosophy that studies such questions as what makes something beautiful.
