  1. Chemistry States and Structure of Matter

  2. Quick Review • ___________ is anything that has mass and takes up space • Elements are composed of ___________ • Atoms have three subatomic particles: • ______________, ______________, and _________

  3. Definitions(write these down!) • Matter- Anything that has volume (takes up space) and mass (contains a certain amount of material) • http://www.brainpop.com/science/matterandchemistry/statesofmatter/

  4. States of Matter • Solids- Have definite shape and volume • Liquids- Have a definite volume but no definite shape • Gases- have no definite volume or shape • Plasma- Has no definite shape or volume and is a highly energized gas

  5. Structure of Matter

  6. Solids • Do you remember the definition of a solid? • Structure of Solids: • Molecules are in constant motion but in solids they move so slowly you cannot see them move • Have a very cohesive force so the molecules are packed tightly together • Cohesive force- the attraction of like substances

  7. Liquids • FACT: since liquids do not have a definite shape they will take the shape of the container in which they are placed • Liquids have a low cohesive force, so the molecules can flow over each other and move a little faster

  8. Gases • Have almost NO cohesive force between molecules • Molecules are not attracted to each other • Gases will expand and will take the shape of any container • Molecules move VERY fast and fly around in all directions

  9. Plasma • Like gases, plasma has almost NO cohesive force; molecules no attracted to each other

  10. Changes in State How Does Matter Change States?

  11. Questions to Consider • How does temperature related to the states of matter? • What happens during melting and freezing? • How are evaporation and boiling different?

  12. Freezing Melting Melting- the changing of a solid to a liquid • the changing of a liquid to a solid

  13. Evaporation Condensation The changing of a gas to a liquid • The changing of a liquid to a gas
