College Halls Task ForceRecommendations • College Halls is designed to be… • An engaged community (Pg. 5) • Students are expected to contribute actively to their College • Contribution should be determined by strengths and interests of individual members or groups; Should enrich the life of the community • Mixture of students (Pg. 5) • Target for first year: 1/3 sophomores, 1/3 juniors, 1/3 seniors • Students will be encouraged to stay for the duration of their time at Vanderbilt, though they retain their right to seek a different housing option in a subsequent year • Programming (Pg. 6) • Should avoid programming clutter • Emphasis on informal interactions • Range of possibilities based on student desires/needs • Programming and character of College • will change over time • Should be student- and community-driven Page numbers reference where additional information can be found in the Task Force full report
College Halls Task ForceRecommendations • Faculty Role (Pg. 7) • Primary role of Faculty Director is to facilitate and mentor students • Less parental than in Commons • Succeed when showing up; must demonstrate their support of students in College Halls • Non-residential faculty will also be invited to engage with the community • Student Role (Pg. 7) • Actively engaged in developing the life of community, however, have choice of which programs to attend and how best to contribute • Opportunity for self-governance and student leadership • Opportunity for involvement in programming process • Students can contribute through any of a variety of activities. Examples include but are not limited to: • initiating or attending programming • inviting others to College Halls events or facilitating small-group gatherings • sponsoring or participating in a creative experience, College- or Hall-sponsored intramural sport, or service activity • serving in student leadership role • and so on.
