  1. Outlining Principles • Begin with statement of proposition. I. Use a consistent indented pattern of ideas. A. Write all points as complete sentences. B. Indent evidence below the point supported. 1. Use separate points for each example or group of statistics. Evidence can be written as short paragraphs. 2. Make a separate point for each expert testimony. II. Attach references (works cited).

  2. Propositions of Fact • Assert truth or falsity. • “Use of marijuana leads to the use of harder drugs.” • Organization of case: • Main points are reasons. • Each point is supported by evidence.

  3. Propositions of Value • Assert relative worth. • “Marijuana is a relatively harmless recreational drug.” • Organization of case. • Develop criteria for value • Apply each criteria in turn, using evidence

  4. Propositions of Policy • Advocate actions be taken. • “Marijuana should be decriminalized.” • Organization of case: • Show significant problem • Demonstrate inherency of problem • Develop policy to reduce problem • Compare benefits with costs of solution.
