  2. Monday—Grammar Colons Rule 1:Use a colon to introduce a list only after a complete sentence. Rule 2: Use a colon between two sentences if the second explains or restates the first. Rule 3: Use a colon to introduce a long quotation. Rule 4: Use a colon between chapter and verse, title and subtitle, hour and minutes, and after a salutation, etc.

  3. Monday—Vocabulary Empathy (noun) Context: I had a lot of empathy for the young man; freshman year of college was difficult for me too. Implications: (what’s your guess and why?) Word parts: (any prefixes or suffixes?)

  4. Monday—Vocabulary Empathy Definition: the power of understanding or imagining what another’s thoughts or feelings might be. Variations: empathize (verb); empathizer (noun); empathetic (adjective)

  5. Tuesday—Grammar Where do the colons go? I need to buy several things at the store carrots, potatoes, broth, onions, and rice. I don’t love spiders they are very creepy. I was reading John 13 5 this morning at 7 30 when Captain America The First Avenger came on the TV.

  6. Tuesday—Vocabulary Feign (verb) Context: I feigned interest in his story so as not to be rude, but it was rather boring. Implications: (what’s your guess and why?) Word parts: (any prefixes or suffixes?)

  7. Tuesday—Vocabulary Feign Definition: to imitate, invent, or represent fictitiously; to pretend. Variations: feigner (noun); feigningly (adverb); feigned (verb or adjective)

  8. Wednesday—Grammar • What colons should be removed? • I wanted: apple pie, ice cream, and a diet coke. • Why? • I always wanted a pet pig: dogs are also nice pets. • Why? • I was reading Mark chapter 1: verse 12. • Why?

  9. Grammar Quiz“Thursday” Directions: add or remove colons where needed. I checked out the following books Hunger Games, Harry Potter, and City of Ember. I went to school today: Lunch was awesome. He purchased the following items at 8 35: duct tape, a shovel, and a tarp. My dog chewed up: my shoes, my purse, and the garbage can. She is untrustworthy. She never keeps secrets.

  10. Wednesday/Thursday Vocabulary Gregarious (adjective) and Hiatus (noun) Context: The gregarious man often took a hiatus in the middle of his daily tasks to go chat with others. Implications: (what’s your guess and why?) Word parts: (any prefixes or suffixes?)

Wednesday/Thursday Vocabulary Gregarious: fond of the company of others; sociable; living in a herd (animals) Variations: gregariously (adverb); gregariousness (noun); non-gregarious (adjective) Hiatus: a break, interruption, or gap in the continuity of a work, task, series, etc. Variations: hiatal (adjective)
