  4. You've got a first class degree, so what? August 2001 – Customer Services Advisor, Norwich Union Insurance Linguistics knowledge used – almost none! Other skills gained during degree used - • Oral communication skills • Strong work ethic • Punctuality/reliability

  5. April 2002 – Clerical Officer, Avon & Somerset Constabulary (SCU) Linguistics knowledge used – almost none! Other skills gained during degree used - • Literacy skills • Team working skills

  6. July 2004 – Office/Events Administrator, Bristol Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (based at Bristol University) Linguistics knowledge used – high level of literacy required Other skills gained during degree used - • All of the skills mentioned so far!

  7. September 2005 – PGCE at UWE • 50% of degree must be relevant to the subject you wish to teach (therefore linguistics relevant to teaching English)

  8. September 2006 – present – Teacher of English at the Grange School and Sports College, Warmley, South Glos Opportunities to which my linguistics background has led: • Helped to set up and deliver A Level English Language in my second year of teaching • Became 'Literacy Co-ordinator in my 3rd year of teaching • Part of the interview panel for Bath Spa PGCE course • Mentored PGCE students for 2 successive years • Mentored 2 NQTs
