Introduction to Athletic Therapy Prevention and Care of Athletic injuries describes the specialized field of Athletic Therapy. Athletic Therapy is a profession devoted to the health and safety of the physically active individual.
Introduction to Athletic Therapy • History and Background of Athletic Therapy in Canada • The CATA was established in 1965 by a group of Athletic Trainers working with professional sports teams. • These trainers were highly skilled and educated individuals charged with returning the injured athlete to activity quickly and cost effectively. • The success of these early association members has led to the growth of the CATA to include a membership of more than 1200 with a well defined scope of practice.

Standard of Reasonable Care • Assumes that an individual is neither exceptionally skillful nor extrordinarily cautious, but is a person of reasonable and ordinary prudence.
Negligence • the failure to use ordinary or reasonable care – the care that persons would normally exercise to avoid injury to themselves or to others under similar circumstances.
Torts • a legal wrong committed against a person or property. • omission vs. commission
Legal Concerns • Statute of Limitation: you only have so long to sue for negligence (1 to 3 years) • Assumption of Risk: athlete’s parents need to know the risks of the sport • Athletic trainers and coaches must reduce the risk of litigation?
