Welcome to Science 71 June 1, 2010 #166 Body Systems –Digestive
Objective • Demonstrate an understanding of the relationships within the levels of organization in the human body. • Describe mechanical, electrical and chemical activities that take place within interacting body systems. • Provide evidence supporting the existence of interdependent relationships among body systems, i.e. respiratory and excretory systems.
Objective • How are systems related and dependent upon each other? • Describe mechanical, electrical and chemical activities that take place within interacting body systems.
Homework • Finish Digestion/Food Inc Movie Questions worksheet • Record one days meals and Activities
Agenda -Digestive System Bell Work- Journal #18 Finish: -Lung Capacity Lab -Carbon Dioxide Exchange
Journal Check • Biology Questions • System definition • More Cartilage/Less Leg • Non-Dominant Hand • Hallway Exercises • Fish cooks faster than beef • Homeostasis (How does the body respond?) • Dependence (Muscles/Skeleton) • How does your body prepare for Gym? • Dark Meat vs. White Meat • 3 Exercises you can do at home and monitor • Sickle Cell Anemia • Acrostic Poem (Circulatory) • White Blood Cell Story
12 Thought for the day… Journal (5 minutes) Imagine how you might feel if you had just discovered that you Sickle Cell Anemia. Describe feelings, emotions, plans for the future (jobs, kids), etc
13 Thought for the day… Journal (5 minutes) Take one of these words and create an Acrostic Poem, based upon the circulatory system as a whole BLOOD HEART VESSELS
14 Thought for the day… Journal (5 minutes) Create a short story about how your body addresses bacteria in your blood stream. Characters include Bacteria Red Blood Cells Antibodies White Blood Cells
15 Thought for the day… Journal (5 minutes) If we breathe using our lungs, how do really small things like fish, worms, and bees breathe? Do they even breathe air at all? Do you think that they have the same or different parts? What makes you think so?
16 Thought for the day… Journal (5 minutes) Please record the amount of lung capacity you are able to carry. Do you think there is any correlation between athletics, eye color, sex, video game ability? Comment
17 Thought for the day… Journal (5 minutes) Please watch the video clip on the gulf spill. What connection or ideas could you make regarding the wild life in the gulf and any of the body systems? What do you think might be the long term effects? Comment
18 Thought for the day… Journal (5 minutes) Fill in with ideas and these tastes (Sweet, Sour, Salty, Bitter) Comment

Digestive System Function-to absorb nutrients from food and remove solid wastes leftovers.
Digestive System Components- Mouth, esophagus, cardiac valve, stomach, pyloric valve, small intestine, large intestine—also called the colon—rectum, and anus -Upper GI-Lower GI
Digestive System Movement through the digestive system. -Smooth Muscle -Peristalsis Movement -Movie/animation -Snake video
Digestive System Similarities in organisms

Food Webs • As we look at the image behind, please note the how the food moves and the amount of food dependant upon the Phytoplankton. • Now begin thinking about what happens to the plastic in the ocean that is getting smaller from the turbidity of the waves and UV Degradation. • Who can safely eat and pass the plastic? • Who can not? What happens when that species dies?
Bell work • Which Organisms population will increase because of the loss of Salmon? • Fox • Zooplankton • Puffin • Phytoplankton • Not Sure
Consequences • What happens when the plastic pieces get so small that Phytoplankton eat them? • What would happen to the food web if their species was to fall and die?
What can be done? • What do you think that you could do now, as a middle-schooler? • “People are doing the best that they know how to do.” How do you help people to know more?
Digestive System Please put these organs into order in relation to the digestive system. SF A. Small Intestine B. Colon C. Anus D. Mouth E. Esophagus F. Stomach G. Pyloric Valve H. Large Intestine I. Appendix J. Cardiac Valve

Bell Work Finish this sentence’s missing word The respiratory system works by anging gases between the lungs d the blood stream
Bell Work • Which event do you think would help you illustrate just how important the respiratory system is? A. Having wind knocked out of you. B. Belching C. Holding your breath underwater D. Sprinting and breathing hard E. Just before an accident or scare you gasp F. Hiccups G. Breathing in Dust and Pollen H. Yawning
CO2 for O2Remember, gases exchange when concentrations are different. High to Low!
Lab – Carbon Dioxide Exchange • Please read over the lab for today’s class. • Prepare for a question
Lab – Carbon Dioxide Exchange • When performing the lab, you should run first and then blow into Tube A? True or False?
Lab – Carbon Dioxide Exchange You should bite the straw when blowing into it. True or False?

Organ Systems Respiratory System -Function -To Exchange gases with the internal and external environments
Organ Systems Respiratory System -Composition -Lungs, Trachea, Nose, Mouth, Pharynx, Larynx, Bronchi, Bronchioles
Respiratory system • Works on the premise, that if you lower the pressure inside the body, higher air pressure from outside will travel in. • The reverse happens when you exhale. Pressure is increased in body, air moves from low pressure to high pressure.
Respiratory System • Hiccups are the result of a stimulated/irritated phrenic nerve (the nerve to the diaphragm) as well as maybe theVegus nerve • Your Respiratory system is lined with Mucus. • Purpose-To catch dirt/dust/pollen/bacteria for eventual expectoration.
Organ Systems Respiratory System -Appearance
Bell Work Which factor do you think is the most common cause of ASTHMA? Pick 1 A. viral respiratory infections, such as influenza (the flu) or bronchitis B. bacterial infections, including sinus infections C. allergic rhinitis D. irritants, such as pollution, cigarette smoke, perfumes, dust, or chemicals E. sudden changes in either temperature or humidity, especially exposure to cold air; F. allergens, for people with allergies G. emotional upsets, such as stress H. exercise.
Bell Work Answers • Any answer that helps you to remember how important breathing is, is correct! • When it comes to asthma, ALL of the answers are factors contributing to cases of ASTHMA. However, they are finding as more particulate is placed into the atmosphere, especially things like irritants found in Fossil Fuels and Smoke
ASTHMA • When it comes to ASTHMA, there are many characteristic appearances. • Inflamed Brochiole tissue • Collected mucus and puss
