What is it?? • Ethanol – the type of alcohol in alcoholic beverages • Powerful and addictive drug • Depressant – A drug that slows down the central nervous system (CNS) • Slows reaction time and impairs vision • Causes Intoxication • A state in which the body is poisoned by a substance and the person’s physical and mental control is significantly reduced
Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) • Amount of alcohol present in 100 ml of blood • Determined by: • Body size and Gender • Food • Amount and rate of intake • Liver can break down (metabolize) about 1 drink per hour
Short-term effects • Nervous system • Brain – less able to control body • Memory – thought processes are disorganized • Judgment – altered and coordination is impaired • Cardiovascular system • Heart – Increases heart rate and decreases blood pressure leading to an irregular beat • blood vessels – expand, releasing body heat
Short-term effects Continued • Digestive system • Stomach – stomach acid production increases often causing nausea/vomiting • Liver – inflammation and scarring • Kidneys – increase urine output, leads to dehydration • Respiratory System • Breathing – alcohol depresses nerves that control breathing, slowing down breathing or stopping it all together
Long-Term effects • Liver Problems • excess fat buildup leading to cell death • Digestive System Problems • Stomach ulcers • Cancer • Pancreatic Problems • Severe pain, vomiting, even death • Changes to the brain • Addiction • Loss of brain functions • Brain damage • Cardiovascular Changes • Enlarged Heart • High Blood Pressure
Driving under the influence • Slows reflexes • Reduces ability to judge distances and speeds • Increases risk-taking behaviors • Reduces a person’s concentration while increasing forgetfulness
Consequences of dui • Harm to the driver and others • Severely restricted driving privileges and/or immediate confiscation of driver’s license • Alcohol-related injuries, property damage, and death • Arrest, jail time, court appearance, and a heavy fine or bail • Police record and possible lawsuits • Higher insurance rates • Living with regret and remorse from these consequences

Legal or Illegal? • Michael is at a Penn State tailgate with his family. He is helping his father grill some food. Michael has never had a sip of alcohol in his life since he is only 17 years old and is underage. Since Michael’s father has raw meat on his hands from making the hamburger patties for the grill, he asks Michael to get him a beer out of the cooler. Michael listens to his father and gets him a beer. A police officer walking by sees Michael with a beer in his hand and asks to see Michael’s ID. Michael says that the beer is unopened and Michael and his father explain to the police officer that the beer is for the father. • Legal or not legal? If not legal, what laws are being broken?

Legal or illegal? • Mr. and Mrs. Stewart have been talking to their daughter Amanda and they have come to the agreement that they will host an after prom party for Amanda and her friends. Amanda’s parents are okay if there is alcohol being drank at the party but say they will not buy any for the party. As the party is going on, there are about twenty underage drinkers partying in the basement. The party is under control and no issues happen throughout the night. • Legal or not legal? Since she was drinking she cannot drive her car and does not want call her mom because she knows she is not allowed to drink. So Lindsey decides to call a cab. Since it is freezing cold outside, Lindsey decides to turn her car on to put the heat on, and she lays down in the back seat because she’s drunk and wants to lay down. Before she knows it, Lindsey wakes up to a knock on her window. It’s the police. • Legal or not legal? If so what laws is she breaking?

Stages of Alcoholism • Stage 1 – Abuse • Physical/Psychological dependence develops • Lies or makes excuses about drinking • Builds a tolerance • Stage 2 – Dependence • Cannot stop drinking (physically dependent) • Becomes central focus • Performance on the job/school/home suffers • Stage 3 – Addiction • Drinking becomes the most important thing in life • If the person stopped drinking, he/she would experience severe withdrawal symptoms
Treatment for Alcohol Abuse • Recovery – The process of learning to live an alcohol-free life • Goal: To stop or control the intake of alcohol • Counseling or medications can help • Sobriety – living without alcohol
