Brief History of Slovakia • 7th-8th C - Great Moravia • 1000 – Hungarian Kingdom • Austro-Hungarian Empire • 1918 – formation of Czechoslovakia • 1948 – fall under communist regime • 1989 – collapse of communism • January 1, 1993 – break up of the federation and formation of Slovak Republic
The Tatra Mountains • Located in the North of the country, on the border with Poland • Attracts lots of tourists • Climate: Long winters and short summers, in most places snow cover lasts for 7-8 months • Highest mountain • Gerlachovsky stit, altitude: 8710 feet
Bratislava – the capital • Located on the Danube River, in the South-west of Slovakia, 34 Miles from Vienna • Population of 450,000 • Old historic centre includes the castle from 9th century, many palaces and museums • Cultural and economic center of the country
Senica – My Home City • Located in the western part of the country • County center • Population: 20,000 • Town privileges: 1396 • Rapid development and population growth in 20th century
Martin – My Second Home • Located in the northern, mountainous part of the country • Distance of 125 miles from my home • Population of 60,000 • Town privileges: 1340 • In 19th Century it was the cultural center of the Slovak nation, important artists, writers, and educational institutions concentrated here • Slovak National Library
GBAS – My School The Bilingual English-Slovak Grammar School Sucany • Located in the village of Sucany, close to the city of Martin • Founded in 1991 by the British Council • Combination of British and Slovak school systems • Around 350 students • 5-year high school • The students are accepted to the school according to the results on the entrance exams • Every year 90-100% of the graduates go to a college • Cambridge Examination Centre
My sponsor Rotary Club • Rotary Club of Zilina • Founded in 1995 • Almost 30 members • Youth exchange: 12 outbound and 9 inbound students this year • Located in the city of Zilina, northern Slovakia • District 2240(Czech Republic and Slovakia) • Rotary activities were renewed in the area after 1989 as a part of District 1920 (Austria) • Formed in 1999 • Around 50 clubs
