  6. A Meaning-First Approach is A Balanced Approach! Does it make sense? Does it look right? Does it sound right?

  7. How does it work? Consider a child trying to read the following: • “The _______ “ • “The _______ ball” • “The _______ ball rolled across the sand into the water.”

  8. Let’s try it together … • Read the first pages of the A-Z reader on your desk together. • One of the words are covered up to encourage your reader to think first of meaning and what sounds right. • Parents, guide your reader to guess the covered word … here are the 3 questions in order.

  9. Guide your child’s guess about the covered word with these questions IN ORDER:

Make a bookmark! • IES Readers: Please create a bookmark so you remember to ask yourself these three questions whenever you want to figure out a new word! • IES Parents: Please read and enjoy a special bookmark for you to help you lead “book talks” with your Remarkable Readers at home!
