While You Read: An Important Warning • Foreshadowing: An author’s use of clues to hint at future events in a narrative. • Reader sometimes does not know the meaning of a clue until much later • Clue may be implied or directly stated • Example: “This would make a great question on a Warm Up Quiz, guys!” exclaimed Miss Hanna. • Example: “And although I have kept the name, I am not – for reasons you will soon discover – the same Charlotte Doyle.” True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle p. 1
After You Read: An Important Warning • What is your first impression of Charlotte? • Is she likable? • Why is she sharing her story? • Can the reader trust her retelling? Why or why not?
Characterization: An Important Warning Direct Characterization tells the audience what the personality of the character is. Example: “The patient boy and quiet girl were both well mannered and did not disobey their mother.” Explanation - The author is directly telling the audience the personality of these two children. The boy is “patient” and the girl is “quiet.”
