Thomas Edison cominciň la sua carriera d'inventore a Newark con il tasto telegrafico e migliorando apparecchiature telefoniche, ma la sua invenzione piů celebre fu senza dubbio quella del fonografo nel 1877. Nel 1891 costruě il Cinetoscopio: attraverso un piccolo foro nell'apparecchio si vedeva un breve filmato per un penny.
