  8. Ph.D. Degree/1 • Requires a total of 90 credit hours beyond the BS degree; Typically 60+ hours for Master degree holders. • 24 credit hours of UF engineering/science coursework of which a minimum of 15 hrshas to be ECE • Advisor input on plan of course work and study

  9. Ph.D. Degree/2 • 2 semesters of supervised teaching EEL6940/7940, 2 credits/section, F/S • 2 semesters of ECE Graduate Seminar, 1 credit/section, F/S

  10. Ph.D. DegreeMajor Milestones/1 • Year 1- Written Qualifying Exam on a Saturday in January on 3 of 8 ECE topic areas. Answer 4/6 questions, at least one in each area. Sign up in November 2013! • Year 1 – Identify PhD advisor by midpoint of Summer semester. Submit preliminary program of study. Shannon Chillingworth, graduate academic advisor

  11. Ph.D. DegreeMajor Milestones/2 • Year 2 – Appoint supervisory committee by midpoint of Fall semester • Year 2 – Complete Oral Proposal in Spring semester.

Ph.D. DegreeMajor Milestones/3 • Year x- One year before graduation- Complete the 24 hr. course requirement • Year x- One year before graduation- Complete a status review presentation with your PhD committee. • Final Year – Pass your final PhD defense and submit dissertation to the Graduate school.

  14. Pre-registration • Please pre-register for courses realistically so that we can measure demand; low enrollment courses may be dropped.

  15. Graduate Grading Policy • Passing grades A=4.0,A-=3.67, B+=3.33, B=3.0, B-=2.67, C+=2.33, C=2.0 • Failing grades; C-=1.67, D+=1.33, D=1.0, D-=0.67, E=0 • Incomplete will be changed into an E after one semester. • Course with a final C grade or better can not be repeated for credit. • Course with a grade less than a C may be repeated and an average of both grades will be calculated. • Must maintain a minimum average GPA of 3.00 for TA, RA, Fellowship, and TO GRADUATE, ECE and Overall.

  18. Financial Support • Research Assistantship (RA). Stipend and tuition waiver if >0.25 FTE. Distributed by ECE faculty. • Teaching Assistantship (TA). Stipend and tuition waiver if >0.25 FTE. Distributed by ECE department. International students must pass SPEAK test. • Other Personal Services (OPS). Stipend but no tuition waiver.

  19. Academic Honesty UF Honor Code All students admitted to the University of Florida have signed a statement of academic honesty committing themselves to be honest in all academic work and understanding that failure to comply with this commitment will result in disciplinary action. This statement is a reminder to uphold your obligation as a UF student and to be honest in all work submitted and exams taken in this course and all others.

  20. Academic Honesty • Do not copy and paste for credit • If results from others are used, clearly state so and give credit in the reference section. • Never cite verbatim. Reformulate in your own words and give credit in the reference section. • If in doubt, ask your class professor what is allowed.

  21. Joint Degree programs • MSEE/MS in Management (theoretical part of MBA) • MSEE/JD (Law school) • Benefits: Requires fewer credits combined than taken separately, ease of scheduling.
