Never Give Up!Chapters 10 & 11 Code Blue Health Science Edition 4
Discouragement • Everyone faces discouragement at one time or another. • This is especially true for those who set high goals. • When discouragement sets in, as it has with Wes Douglas, there are several things one should remember.
Things to Remember • No one is a failure until he or she quits trying. • Everyone makes mistakes. • If you aren’t making mistakes it means you are not stretching. • That doesn’t mean we should make foolish mistakes. • That doesn’t mean we should make the same mistakes over again. • Mistakes are stepping stones to success. • They provide the knowledge we need to succeed in the future. • People make their own luck. • It is not the past, but the future that counts!
Study the lives of great people and you will find that most of them have suffered many disappointments and failures • Consider Abraham Lincoln. Before becoming President of the United States: • He failed in business as a storekeeper. • He failed in farming. • He was defeated in the legislature. • He was defeated for nomination to the vice presidency. • His sweetheart died. • He had a nervous breakdown.
Success vs. failure • “Not many people are willing to give failure a second opportunity. They fail once and it’s all over. The bitter pill of failure is often more than most people can handle. If you’re willing to accept failure and learn from it, if you’re willing to consider failure as a blessing in disguise and bounce back, you got the potential of harvesting of the most powerful success forces.” -- Joseph Sugarman
Failure • “I am not judged by the number of times I fail, but by the number of times I succeed; and the number of times I succeed is in direct proportion to the number of times I can’t fail and keep on trying.” -- Tom Hopkins • “Don’t be afraid to fail. Don’t waste energy trying to cover-up failure. Learn from your failures and move on to the next challenge. It’s okay to fail. If you’re not failing, you’re not growing.” -- H. Stanley Judd • “Forget about the consequences of failure. Failure is only a temporary change in direction to set you straight for your next success.” -- Denis E. Waitley • “Never walk away from failure. On the contrary, study it carefully – and imaginatively – for its hidden assets.” -- Michael Korda
Failure • “We learn wisdom from failure much more than from success. We often discover what will do, by finding out what will not do; and probably he than never made a mistake never made a discovery.” -- Samuel Smiles • “What is defeat? Nothing but education. Nothing but the first step to something better.” -- Wendell Phillips • “When defeat comes, accept it as a signal your plans are not sound, rebuild the plans, and set sail once more towards your coveted goal.” -- Napoleon Hill
Failure • “Would you like me to give you a formula for success? It’s quite simple, really. Double your rate of failure. You’re thinking of failure as the enemy of success. But it isn’t at all. You can be disgraced by failure – or you can learn from it. So go ahead and make mistakes. Make all you can. Because, remember that’s where you’ll find success. On the far side of failure.” -- Thomas J. Watson
There are factors that are less correlated with success than many students imagine • These include • Intelligence • Personal attractiveness • High school popularity • Family background
Factors heavily correlated with success include: • Attitude, and . . . • Work
Attitude • “The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind.” -- William James • “He can who thinks he can, and he can’t who thinks he can’t. This is an exorable indisputable law.” -- Orson Sweet Marden
Attitude • Success or failure depends more upon attitude than upon capacity . . . • “Successful men act as though they have accomplished or are enjoying something. Soon it becomes a reality. Act, look, feel successful, conduct yourself accordingly, and you will be amazed at the positive results.” -- Dr. DuPree Jordan Jr.
One of the most important attitudes is an unwillingness to be discouraged or to quit in the face of obstacles • “Good luck is another word for tenacity of purpose.” -- Ralph Waldo Emerson • “I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward.” -- Thomas A. Edison
Work, luck and success . . . • “The harder I work, the luckier I get.” -- Donald Trump • “Success is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration.” --Thomas Alva Edison
Wes Douglas may have jumped too quickly in accepting the job as administrator • He is obviously in over his head. • If he fails, it could hurt his chances for future employment opportunities. • In addition, he will probably be blamed for the failure of the hospital and all the people who will lose their jobs.
His choices seem to be . . . • Quit now and go back to his accounting job. • Put as little effort into the job as possible so he won’t look foolish when he fails. • Learn from past mistakes, put his full efforts into the job with the anticipation he will overcome the obstacles to success. Explain what the consequences of each action might be and tell what option you would select.
Never give up!!! • “It is no use saying ‘We are doing our best.’ You have got to succeed in doing what is necessary.” -- Sir Winston Churchill
