About Patty Kazmaier A gifted scholar-athlete, Patty Kazmaier was a four-year varsity ice hockey letter-winner at Princeton where she anchored the defense and led the Tigers to the Ivy League Championship in three consecutive seasons (1981-82 through 1983-84), while earning multiple league honors. Athletic excellence ran in the Kazmaier family, as her sister, Kathy, played college ice hockey at the University of New Hampshire and her father, Dick Kazmaier, a graduate of Princeton University, won the Heisman Trophy in 1951, beating out Pro Football Hall of Famer Frank Gifford. A gifted scholar-athlete, Patty battled a rare blood disease for more than a year before passing away in 1990 at the age of 28. A loving mother and wife, she left behind her husband, Mark J. Sandt and an infant daughter, Serena. Patty Kazmaier represented the spirit, character and excellence, both on and off the ice, upon which this award is based. A truly exceptional individual, Patty Kazmaier’s achievements in life and in sport will serve as an inspiration for all women who play ice hockey now and in the future.
About The Award The Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award annually recognizes the accomplishments of the most outstanding player in NCAA Division I women’s ice hockey. A Snapshot of Women’s Hockey Girls’/women’s hockey is one of the fastest growing segments of the sport and it has gained considerable popularity in the last decade. USA Hockey officially started its girl’s and women’s program in 1990-91, when 6,336 female ice hockey players registered with the organization. At the conclusion of the 2010-11 membership season, that number has grown close to 66,000. On the college level, there are 86 NCAA-sanctioned teams competing in 2011-12, including 34 at the Division I level. Recognizing the growth in the women’s game, the NCAA began a championship program for women’s ice hockey in 2000-01. In addition, non-varsity college programs are sprouting up all over the country, with 51 teams in two divisions of the American Collegiate Hockey Association. Internationally, women’s ice hockey gained a world championship in 1990, then became an Olympic sport in 1998. Since then, Team USA has captured a medal at all 13 world championships and four Olympics, including world titles in 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2011, and Olympic gold in 1998. In addition, 2008 marked the first-ever world championship at the women’s U18 level, and the United States captured world titles in two of the first three events (2008 & 2009).
