The Beginning About 2000 years after Catal Huyuk people began to settle in the Nile River Valley Every Year the Nile River Floods The Floods Make the valley fertile
B. The Great River The World’s Longest River > 4000 miles long Through many countries and enters into the Mediterranean Sea Heavy rains cause floods leaving silt At the Mediterranean it leaves silt forming the delta “∆” Upper Egypt is in the south Lower Egypt is in the north
C. High Water or Hunger? The desert is not good for farming The silt from the flooding makes the valley very fertile Too much rain = villages and livestock destroyed Too little rain = crops don’t grow They invented the Nilometer – steps to measure the height of the flood each year
D. Nile Farming After the land began to dry out they planted – in the rich silt Irrigated – used shadoofs to get water from the Nile and put into canals **** just like in the Fertile Crescent
